The 1980s-era Steyr GB: Thoughts, observations and range report

And it's the only norinco i think is an actual turd! Both the steyr and the HK are very soft shooting guns, and silly accurate with the fixed barrels. I think norc judged the gas port size wrong, or it's something about the grip shape or size, but it's the only 9mm pistol i've ever fired that hurt my hands......

I remember they steyr grip feeling really fat in the hand, but that was a decade and a half ago......

Interesting. My norc is very soft shooting. Ergo's do suck ass though. It was cheap as dirt, so I'll be taking the Dremel to it in future to "improve" it.

Cool gun. Thanks for the great write-up. I wonder if the fouling was what killed it for Austrian Army adoption.

Reading about its commercial failure, and the list of complaints they had about it makes me wonder about what contemporary buyers knew about handguns at the time.

Pretty sure it was the cost and simplicity of the Glock that killed the GBs chances for adoption by the Austrian force. It is also my understanding that the problems were with the American manufactured (LES) version, not the Austrian Steyr version.

I didn't notice the frame heating up but the slide certainly did.

Indeed it is. I wonder if the one you saw in the early 1990s was the only other GB I'd ever seen before mine arrived. It was sometime in the mid-late 1980s, and it was Rick from R&R who owned it.

Hard to say. The seller lived behind the imperial oil refinery in woodside, you had to go through their gate on the land side to get back there.

I almost bought one brand new while posted to Germany in the mid eighties but I decided not to because the trigger was so heavy and rough. Good to hear that yours has a better trigger.
