The respected gun writer and senior editor of "Guns and Ammo" magazine, Garry James, wrote the article "The Ultimate Enfield" in the november 2008 issue, and on page 78, Garry James wrote:

"The rifle itself, now called L42A1", measured 46.5 inches overall and had a barrel lenght of 2.5 inches, both about two inches longer than their No.4 counterparts".

This article is otherwise well written, and I enjoyed reading it :)

shame on them for allowing a typo to make it too print.

with jeff cooper gone, i have zero reason to buy the monthly G&A. and any of the milsurp articles the run will be reprinted in the "military surplus" issues they put out.

I have seen a Lee Enfield with a 2.5" barrel.

If you read hatcher's Notebook, he describes cutting a barrel back in 1 inch increments, and noting the velocity drop. When the barrel got real short, the bullet skirt enlarged, so the bullet looked like an air gun pellet.

When you walk in the door of Fultons (at Bisley) mounted on the left is a shadow box with a 2.5" barrel (no explanation) and some bullets with expanded skirts.

Garry James was writing about a "2.5 inch barrel", L42A1 sniper rifle :)

Looks to me he did not, like some other famous gun writers, do his research in these fine pages, before he printed this story in his big and advertisement $$rich gun magazine :)
