The 2012 Whitetail Rut

Well this may be it for me. I was out yesterday and saw no racks, just some does still hanging with their fawns. The rut just doesn't seem to be too hot at my particular spot yet. Now my winter work season is kicking into high gear so I'll be lucky to get another chance to get out there but who knows.

Rut is in in central ab. Got this guy chasing up some does.

I think the rut was kind of starting where I was the other day because we grunted one buck in to 11 meters of me where I tagged him. Kind of cool to see for my first deer.

I was up in Slave Lake last week and the rut started the morining of the 15th of November. Some bucks were rutting hard and others were just getting into it. My hunting buddy shot his buck on wednesday the 14th where the buck did not show any signs of rutting. The following day the testosterone switch was turned on where my buck fell from being in love with a doe. Being in love could be deadly.

Well boys, it is officially my last day of hunting for the year. If it doesn't happen in the next 4.5 hours, it won't happen. I'm on a lunch and warm up break in the truck right now but I'll be back out in a few minutes.
This morning, 45 mins. before legal time, I was on the way to my area and was a few miles off when I saw a bunch of does on a field next to the road and I could just make out a buck chasing one of them as I whizzed by. On my field there was a yearling buck that came to check me out, then went on his way. Other than that it's been a dead morning, except for the wind, which is very lively. Now I have to decide if I want to sit and watch the field edges or go after them in the thick stuff. Wish I'd brought my .30-30, it'd be a lot handier than this 26" heavy barrel .308 I'm lugging around.
Please cross your fingers for me, there's a brute out here somewhere that I got on camera twice in August.
