The 2017 Calgary Easter Gunshow Report

I only had an hour to run through the show on Friday morning, I thought there was more milsurp rifles than previous years...Although the prices weren't great.

Terri's display of Thai rifles and ammo was very interesting. She took some time and went over the various examples of the rifles and ammunition and their history for a couple of us that were examining them.

Auggie D.

Calgarians must be hurting. The turnout was much, much lower than last year especially on Saturday, and our sales, and most of the other vendors I talked with, were half or 1/3 of last years...Not surprising given the economy. But every time I went past the CFO's table I wanted to spit on the floor.:nest:

It was light, I comfronted the CFO on the 10/22 magazine issue. Told them my 15 could not understand how he would be a criminal if he used a 10/22 BC magazine in our gopher field....

Also thanked them for making me buy another .22 semi auto rifle and a bunch of 25 round magazines, they said nothing.

Also let them know I was looking forward to the CSSA 10/22 magazine court challenge outcome.

Loved this display.

As we know they are watching us all. :)

The CSSA went into detail on how they will be be challenging the RCMP on the 10/22 matter.

Taking pictures was not really promoted there, unless you had permission.

He is my buddys display.

Loved the WW2 Jeep display it was great!

Foot traffic and money being spent was way down, most were just looking, but all in all they were few real deals.

You mean that the line up to get in could have been longer?

I liked the new vendors, but didn't see wolverine. They had a few deals, but as usual most are marked up. The worst is when they won't budge on price because there is a lot of show left. Saw a lot of enfields this year, but changes every year depending what's in.

Just got home from the show a few hours ago and no complaints whatsoever about the show. I brought 13 guns (mostly dewats) to the show and only brought home one. I have always felt that if you have 10000 people go past your table at a show like Calgary, and your stuff doesn't sell, then you have either a price or a quality problem. This was my second best show ever, and I was worried I did not have much to sell.

As a social occasion it was great. Got to yak with lots of old friends, and think I made a couple new ones. Found a direct fire sight for one of my howitzers, including the Canadian made telescope can that mounts on the shield. The scopes are relatively common, but the can is not. Made a few other buys as well, but that was the highlight for me.

Wolverine did not come out, as the costs of bringing staff out includes transportation, food, lodging, and salaries...it was all hard to justify. But there were lots of 2 and 3 table vendors which was nice. More Enfields than I have ever seen before, and a number of the DCRA 7.62 conversions.

Trip home was challenging though, as we were hitting complete whiteout around Medicine hat and into Saskatchewan.

Its always funny that people want to seem to do a lot of complaining about shows. But what else would you do that would be better?
We attended from Victoria. it was a little quieter than previous years, but we were happy with what we bought and sold. Good selection of milsurps, seemed to be a lot of No 4 Mk 1s this time. Certainly some over priced stuff and some bad labelling. I got very excited when I saw 2 rifles labelled as L39. Unfortunately they weren't. Similarly a 1941 Long Branch turned out to be 1943. There were some hidden gems such as a Romanian .22 trainer for $95 and a nice Sportco 7.62 target rifle we got for $525. Lots of bits and pieces (C2 bolt cover with early telescope mount that still needs research, brand new and working aiming post marker for us ex artillery types).

Well done to the organizers and volunteers and we will be back again next year.

The mp40 was cool to see, but buddies price reflected the fact that he has heard that "every couple years businessmen from Bejing walk in and buy all the dewat MG's on the table" so he is comfortable sitting on it until that happens.
