The 257 weatherby mag...tell me about it

257

Now I've never shot or owned one of these cartridges, but this statement leaves me less than impressed! If you recovered the bullet on a spine shot mulie, it ain't nothing to crow about! My .30-06 blows 2" exit holes on deer. The only bullets I've ever found were in a large moose shot through both shoulders and being caught in the hide on the other side.

I hit it quartering away and the bullet entered 6'' forward of the base of the spine and it ended up in the front shoulders, it travelled 24'' or so and we are shooting a mature mule deer here so I see that as decent.

I used them on whitetails with 120gr partitions and they were always complete pass thru, with looney sized exit wounds.... All three deer went down on the spot....

I'm buying a weatherby vanguard in a 257 weatherby mag, got a smokin' deal on it. Tell me things about this cal, any experiences, do you own one, what can I expect, downfalls, recoil, anything is good. I plan to use it primarily as a deer rifle with the odd coyote/wolf hunt. Good for elk? Moose? Bear?

It's a great medium game cartridge but not a moose elk or bear round , although it will kill any of them with the proper shot it is out of it's domain for this size of game. Use more bullet weight.

Has anybody here used one for elk or moose? A 243 isn't considered a moose round either but I know a few guys who have taken elk and moose with them. That's all my dad ever shot was a 243 and he put a moose in the freezer every year.

I've taken 2 moose with a .257 WBY. Both big cows. One I killed with a broadside chest shot at 50 yds and the the other head on at 30 yds. Both were dropped and killed with 1 shot each using WBY factory 100 gr. ammo.

I have owned both with the 257wby driving a 100gr bullet at 3550fps,and the 7mmstw driving a 140gr bullet at 3500fps.Very similar velocity, but the 7mmstw shoots slightly flatter, with slightly less wind drift due to the higher BC of the 7mm bullets.

I'll always prefer the STW for my own use, but the .257 'Bee makes some of it's attributes available to those with somewhat less recoil tolerance. Like my 12 year old for instance. I'm solidly in the "speed kills" camp, even if I won't let him shoot that far yet.

looked at one for a while then settled on 25-06.

I was not reloading my own yet and the price and availability of ammo was a big point.

I would say that it is an excellent deer gun that will work on bigger critters in a pinch. But I'll keep my 7mmRM and 300WM for moose and elk :)
