The .270 Winchester

I wouldn't use a powder that I'm not 100% sure of what it is.

Yep, spread it over your lawn in the spring. I wouldn't use it. And if you advise some on the range that's what you did, you may find that some may get up and move to a bench a safe distance away... :)

I used to buy #44 powder from XL Explosives, now Higginson, and loaded many pounds of it into .308, .30/06 , and .30/30 cases. It was a very good powder and accounted for many moose in northern ontario many years ago. I just finished the last of it a year or so ago and it was purchased probably 50 years ago, maybe more as I have been reloading for over 60 years. Still smelled the way powder was supposed to smell and I always look for more at gun shows. there is still a bit of it to be found. If you have any, load up some light loads using 3031 data, start low the way you should with any loads and work up. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised. Hope this helps

Bearhunter knows of which he speaks!! My experience parallels his, and I used a fair
quantity of that old #44 powder in 30-30, 6mm, 243, and 38-55. Used to get a big
ball of fire out the muzzle when fired. Had more than one person at the range ask
what the heck it was, lol. 3031 data works just fine. Dave.

Without personally seeing the packaging or knowing your friend, I would tend to err on on the side of caution.
If you do proceed at your own risk, I have had good luck with the following loads with IMR3031
Nosler E-Tip 130gr with IMR3031 43.0gr and seated 3.300" OAL
Berger VLD 130gr with IMR3031 44.0gr and seated 3.300" OAL
Both loads are less than maximun and were sub moa in my Ruger M77 with 22" barrel.
I never did find a good load for 110gr myself.

IMR 7977 is an amazing powder to use with 150 grain Nosler Partitions in my 270 Winchester (Weatherby Vanguard S2). At 62 grains I will get 2950 fps with no pressure signs and 1.0 MOA groups at 100 yards. Not bad for a Partition bullet shot off of sandbags. The 24 inch barrel helps too!

Hi everyone

Just to come back to this thread and finish it off ...

I actually used all of that powder in some 22-250, 30-30, and 308 loads.

It all seemed to work fine using IMR 3031 data.

Thanks for all the great info and imparted wisdom!
