The 30-30 club, are you in?

Had a Winchester 94AE .30-30 and sold it. Thought I would go just semi-auto. Then Hornady came out with LEVERevolution ammo, Winchester went under and semi-auto only didn’t work out so now I regret selling it. At least it went to someone who appreciates it.

Hi Everyone,

I don't often have an opportunity to post, due to time constraints, however a very long work shift for all of December and most of January had kept me close to home so I had time to tinker with something that I've always wanted to build.

I've been a big fan of the Henry Levers, and also in particular the 30/30 for a long time. It's an easily manageable round but provides enough punch for a mid-range cartridge. Many moons ago, it was a "really affordable plinking round...

A while ago, I came across an used, later date, large loop Winchester 94 that shot quite well. However, I found it a bit heavy and clunky yet I've always wanted to minimize a '94 to make a light carry carbine. Inspired by a comic book, and a tune by Duane Eddy I decided to revert the Winchester '94 back to the days of the original Henry 1860s and as a result, created my version of what I call; the "Ghost Rider:"

Very light, and easy to swing. I can pick this piece up with my pinky. I took the rifle to the range today, and sighted it in, and then I managed to hit the 200 meter gong with little effort. Despite its light weight, the recoil was still negligible and unlike many single shot survival arms, it chambers 6 rounds of 30/30 in a light compact package.

Every time I pick this piece up, I can hear Duane strumming "Ghost Rider" on is guitar in the background...

:)

@Wild-Wild-West, Well that's different. :)

Personally I still like somewhere for forward hand placement other then a hot barrel, and I'd be worried about stuff getting stuck in the cut out buttstock, but it looks pretty interesting.

maybe a vertical fore-grip to match the butt:D. not my style, but whatever blows your skirt up. i've got a hand-me-down winchester 94 that my grandpappy gave me about 20 years ago, and a savage 24D. still kicking myself for not buying the browning highwall 30-30 octagonal barrel i found last year.

Love of my life!

Like many of the posts I do have a Win 94 chambered to 30-30. It is an NRA centennial edition (it is fairly new) but with the saddle ring and the other little features, it looks fantastic. Handles well, and who can't admit that a lever gun is '###y'
Which leads me to fancy I want a Marlin lever action. (maybe .444 Marlin?, but the 45/70 seems to be more readily available used...)

got my first bear with a 94 winnie. i loved that gun, had to sell it during some hard times.
lots of memories.

Hey WWW, you let me shoot that gun of yours the other day! Thanks!! I know you got the gong at 200 (or was it 250?) with that Ghost Rider of yours :D

As I said then, I have a (borrowed for as long as I need it, I hope) model 94 that I went hunting with. I really like it and hope to get one of my own some day. I carried that rifle over 5 days of hunting in the bush and for a first-time hunt, did not feel it was heavy at all. Yours however, was light as a feather! Also mine did not have the bolt safety that yours had...just half-cocked which suited me just fine. The thing I liked most about the 30-30 was that it was so much cheaper than my hunting buddy's 30-16 rounds! That alone makes me want a model 94 in 30-30 :D

Well, see you at the range sometime, and happy shootin!:)

30-30

I must admit that I thought this was a neat calibre (mostly for nostalgic reasons, and also its modest powder requirements), so I actually bought some dies and brass BEFORE I had a rifle. I subsequently picked up an older, but very serviceable, 340 Savage bolt action. There's just something fun (and a little challenging) using the iron sights and of course, recoil is a non-issue. I look forward to refinishing the wood on this old rifle. I think it's going to give me a lot of pleasure at the range, and who knows, maybe someday I will use it to anchor a whitetail.
Cheers

There is no better all-around gun than a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94 chambered in 30-30. They are light, durable and point well and can usually be found relatively cheap. Also the 30-30 is probably one of the cheapest and most readily available rounds in Canada. I found boxes of Winchester 150 gr and 170gr for $12.00 a box at a local ranch supply store, can't beat that.

Just got a Winchester RCMP Commemorative 2-Centennial model in 30-30. Shoots great, really nice feel, looks good, too. Sights have to be adjusted a bit, will do it this Saturday at the range. The only minor drawback so far - speed loading through this little port on the side. Really hurts the fingers! Otherwise, it's a beauty.

As soon as I get my PAL I'll inherit my Grandpappy's ole Savage bolt in thurdy-thurdy. I'm really looking forward to mucking around with handloads for it.

I know for certain the stock needs refinishing.

I'm in, love my Winchester 94, pre 64 with character.

Great Grandpa had an oldie on the gun rack in the kitchen and used it until he was 96 years old. As a kid I remember that gun, my uncle has it now.

It's natural for me to go to the 30-30 for atleast one hunt each deer season, some think I am at a huge disadvantage, but bagging a deer with it would mean a lot to me.

Missed a doe this past fall at 180 yards with iron sights, a little far out for that set up but I had a gut feeling...

First ever 30-30 I had came out of the local dump! My great Uncle ran an small dump in an area that had alot of old cottages/camps and when they did spring cleaning they regularly threw guns out and my uncle would bring them home and give them away(first gun Cooey 39 came from dump)! When I was 15 he gave me a 30-30 single shot bolt action, but my Dad took it away as he wanted me to have a repeater for Moose hunting and thought the 30-30 eneamic. I didn't remember who the gun Manufacture was and have been searching for 22 years and have not found a soul who new anybody that made such a rifle. I was looking on Gun Broker and somthing caught my eye the listing said (Husky, bolt action, singleshot) low and behold there it was the dump gun that was given to me 22 years before:dancingbanana: I tryed to get the seller to export it to Canada ,but was unwilling:( If anyone has one for sale I would appreciate a email dzywina@yahoo.ca I have right now a Marlin model 36-A-DL sporting rifle in real nice shape, and a Win model 94 saddle carbine (1920 vintage) that I bought for $40 bucks 2 years ago:eek: but thats another story, hope all you fine gentalmen enjoy handling and shooting the vernable 30-30 winchester, regards Dale in T-Bay

I always wanted a 30-30 lever action, and it was the first gun I bought when I got my PAL. Its a Marlin 30AS. I bought it on the EE here and will probably hang on to this one for quite a while. Its fun to shoot, accurate enough, and (IMHO) good looking.

I put a fixed 4x scope on it and, if I wouldn't have broken my right arm in November, I would've attempted my first whitetail with it this fall. I'm no gun expert but I think the 30-30 is a good round and plenty enough for whitetail (and with the right range/shot placement just about anything in N.A.). I plan on always having a 30-30 in the safe.
