The .30 Gibbs.. ?

Quote : 30 Gibbs forming - There are sometimes issues with forming the cases from 06 as the new shoulder comes from the neck. So you'd have to go up, down, fireform..... using .35 Whelen brass might fix that . RJ

It does. Same with 338-06 if you can find any. A Square used to make it, but I haven't seen any in quite a while. - dan

I have a 338-06 and I buy my brass through Weatherdy it’s expensive at $75 for a box of 20 unprimed brass. So the brass is still available but hard to get up here in Canada

Kev, why would you pay $3.75 each, when a single pass of a 30-06 case through the sizing die gives you excellent brass?

Ted

I owned a 30 Gibbs for some time. Did a fair bit of load development, to see what it would do.

It had a 26" tube, with a 1-10" twist. I took 180s out to just a tad over 2960, and 165s made
3040. Considering that my 24" 30-06 was showing 2870 with the 180 and 3005 with the 165, I
felt the hassel of making the brass not really worthwhile. Sold it off to an eager buyer. :) Dave.

I appreciate Your word an experience here mate, i just like those, slightly different to normal, cartridges, so something must be Ackley'd , tossing up with 7-08 , or 30-06 LH one... :)

but cheers again!

The Gibbs versions will be slightly faster, all else being equal (though all else seldom is). I have also had a couple Ackley 30-06's, and still have a 7mm-08 Ackley, among others. Something slightly different is simply more interesting, I find. - dan

There is no better reason to make something different than because you felt like it.

I like oddball stuff too, but it’s gotta be pretty sweet for me to overcome my laziness for brass prep.

I have had a number of Ackley Improved chamberings over the years. Intriguing, to say the least.

I would have to say my 6.5x55 AI is the best one I have used to date. It is the one I have kept.

It is built on a Remington 721 action, and has a 1-8" twist Lothar-Walther tube on it. I shot it in
the Burns Lake 1000 yard match and it always did well. Last year I took it Elk hunting, and again,
it performed admirably. [big cow elk, 355 yards, one shot DRT]

If you have a yearning for the unusual, I say go for it! The one downside is that if one decides to
sell, the market is smaller for these creations than for standard chamberings. Dave

I have one Gibbs chambered rifle on a FN 98 action. It sports a 26 inch stainless barrel. It is the slightly more hairy chested version of the 338-06, the 340 Gibbs.
I dont have a chronograph, so I can't claim any staggering velocity figures. I have taken 6 moose over the years with this rifle. They fell like they were hit with the hammer of Thor.

here is a few photos I posted on CGN in the hunting thread- large game pictures, back in 2009.
Moose had a 51 inch spread and widest paddles of all the moose I have ever taken.

bottom picture is my 340 Gibbs

Hey Dave, i think thats wise words, an in this situation, that Left hander is a keeper for my hunting time, it would be one that does get rebarreled down the track if it was to 'shoot out'- from past owners word i dont believe its been shot much though.
the 708 is the Kimber ultralight, which are somewhat hard to find in AU and expensive, ill keep it for life too - an DO have a .308 win standard kimber montana barrel sitting here also!! which excited me heaps to look into the 284 route a while ago but i have now Got that 7 Rem Mag.....

i like the idea of still firing standard cases in these Ackley chamberings at worst case.. where as with the 284... i cant just grab a box to get through..

the 30-06 is so solid, i Could see it going Ackley, an possibly moving off the 7 Rem mag....500-600m.... il bet the 30 06Ackley dials in nicely with a sleek 150gr so lol :)

an load woodleighs for bushstalkin sambar.

kimbers backpack only these days , so it coul be nice to have an Ackley 7 that i dont shoot heaps.. but has a touch more..like a 270 :) :D

ha ha thats a fair call too mate!

these ackleys and firing standard ammo excites me lol, not so much fire forming or die sizing brasses..
