The 30 M1 Carbine as a hunting rifle for big game

Id think a 110 grain 30 cal bullet at mild speeds would make for a poor performing round on anything over 100 pounds

Have at 'er, what's your opinion, or the rifle, and of the cartridge.
Load it with 150 Partitions and head out for Leopards... 180s for Lions, and 220s for Elephant.
Its a great cartridge and needs more hardcore use, I mean 30 Carb, 30-30, 6 of one, half a dozen of the other :)

According to Cartridges of the World due to it's low energy level it's illegal for deer in most states and about the same power as a 32-20.

Perhaps it'd work so-so if you kept your shots under 50 yards and placed your shots perfectly besides.

I suppose it would OK on close in coyotes and other pests or really close deer hit exactly right. The only cheap ammo for it is FMJ, so plinking at gophers probably won't produce the splat that we all love.

As well, the M1 carbine is restricted for the most part and is not known to be a precision rifle. That's a moot point though if the deer is within groping distance.

"...only cheap ammo for it..." Where? Milsurp isn't readily available anywhere and isn't legal for hunting anything.
"...Saw a lot of wounded trees..." Yep. Mind you, to kill a deer you actually have to hit it.
The .30 Carbine will kill deer. Don't use factory ammo. A handloaded 110 grain HP or SP will do it. Not at long range, of course. Most deer in Ontario are shot at well under 100 yards. If the carbine wasn't evil I wouldn't think twice about using mine. It's better than any .22 CF any day.

I have shot two does with an M1 carbine. One was around 70yds,and the other around 30.Both shots taken out of a stand on still deer. The deer at 30yds or so was slighlty quartering away, and the 110gr hp was under the hide on the far shoulder. The 70yd deer was broad side with a complete pass through double lung.Neither deer went more than 40yds.
Those are the only two times I had ever shot deer with the M1,and probably the last.I passed up another nice doe trotting quartering towards me at about 60yds.I thought it a bit to risky of shot.
They are a perfect situation gun,and cartrige(alot like a bow). They arent a very accurate rifle, and a bit light in the arse for deer.I will be using it for a fun gun in the geavel pit from now on.

Maybe if you use it for a club.I wouldnt recommend bouncing a round off a bear skull though.Nice knowin ya. "The graveyards are filled with indispensable men".Winston churchill.

Generally the accuracy is poor with the M1, I would not want to try anything over 50 yards in fear of wounding them. Just about anything the military built is better than the M1.

VERY untrue

my m1 carbines are as accurate as any other iron sighted carbine out there

I would not hesitate to make a 100 yard shot at a man sizeded target

I have no trouble hitting clays all day at 100 meters with my m1 carbines

it was never intended to be a full power rifle it was very popular with the troops due to its 15 rnd mags and light weight

they made allmost 7 million of them.....

Just cause they made 7 million of them does not mean they are'nt under powered and they GENERALLY are inaccurate for deer over 100 yards if that. Everyone has an opinion on what is accurate and adequate for hunting and I don't believe they are either with the ones I have shot.
