The 308 family - capable of hunting anything in North America?

I should say the bears I wouldn't mind shooting aren't out - the city, garbage eating bears are out. Not too keen on shooting a bear that just finished chowing down on a used diaper.

I headed south of town on the weekend and found one patch of green and much of the area was still under snow. Should be +20 C tomorrow....but I usually find the first week of May is when things really get hopping.

Total hijack.

This thread has rekindled my interest in the .358 Win - basic plinking loads with cheap cast bullets on up to the 250gr pills. Have any of you used the 225gr Partition at 2400-2500 fps? That looks good for the big stuff too.

Here is the whole .308 family in H&R Ultra rifles;

.243 & .308;

.260 & .338 Fed;

7mm-08 & .358 Win;

And manure-spreaders on all of those mild beasties? You're a funny lad Hoyt, but that's the benefit of the H&R...you could be into that whole package well under $2K including optics which would be a very tall order to match with any other platform.

Where's the wrong buzzer Alex???

I also have the whole .308 family in restocked And glassed Ruger M77's... and guess what? Considering the barrel, action and stock work, the Handi Ultra's cost me more $$$... they are worth it, as they carry and shoot as nice as any rifle... I have spent money on far stupider things... an all inclusive trip to a Peurta Plata Five Star resort that should have been a Two Star resort, immediately comes to mind...

Those Ultra's look beautiful Hoyt. Glad to hear they shoot as good as they look. How about posting the M77 family too?

Thinking from a legal definition of 'capable' will any of this family let you go bison hunting?
OP- cool project you have going. Interesting to see how you can separate the different calibers into different hunts.

It can be done with 3.08 but it's a really bad idea, head shots only and if it gets pissed you better be ready to move!, good for black bears and moose all day long though.

The key is is premium bullets that let the 3.08 punches above it's weight.

Bears are out here but not feeding much yet... the Ontario court shot down the attempt to block the spring bear hunt... so it is a go for May 1st... my son is looking for a spring archery bear to go with his archery turkey.

imo the spring bear hunt is a joke.

my suggestion to fix the over population is this

bear tags for 5 dollars a pop not 50

up to 5 tags per person

10 dollars tags for americans not 300 what "normal"American wants to pay that plus fuel

bet the bear issue up north in Ontario would get solved real fast , less people being mauled, less crops being wrecked by fat bears ect ect

I think its a joke to have people pay 50 bucks for a tag when most farmers and hunters view them as an over grown COON .

end rant

Soooo.... how do we get your system passed when we can barely get a highly restrictive "pilot project" spring bear reimplemented??? The problem is misunderstanding and misdirection.... the antis and politicians did a number on legitimate wildlife biology... and ensured a badly misinformed (voting) public...

Having hunted black bears extensively for forty years... my view is that they are a fine big game animal... certainly not vermin... they can do damage in conflict with human activity, but so can other wildlife from mice to moose... JMO.
