I've had mine since '88. I've found it to be a decent short range hammer (under 300). Trouble is; while that takes care of a great deal of hunting situations it doesn't describe my own conditions at all. For those situations where I wouldn't mind a bigger and heavier chunk of lead and can be reasonably certain of moderate range the "poorman's .375" has long taken a back-seat to the real .375.

The non-magnum mediums had their run, back when a typical hunter's range was limited to what he could pull off with open sights. After scopes became first common, then the norm they fell from favor. Enthusiasts and handloaders will use whatever trips their fancy but the mass appeal that keeps cartridges commercially viable just isn't there.

I'm on my second whelen. Have yet to harvest anything with it but my current one is a Remington 7600 that I bought from gmc here. Grew up shooting a pump and always wanted a whelen. Gonna give the 225 grain accubonds a go this year in this one.

I've got a blued 7600 carbine with plastic shotgun stocks, and iron sights. SHOT SHOW run from Ellwood Epps. One of 4 if I recall correctly, we bought two of them. Best Ontario moose gun you can get if you ask me. Just the most satisfying caliber to shoot.

My Whelen started as an early stainless Ruger .30-06 MKII that I bought as a donor (I'd never buy a .30-06 on purpose!!). Rembo installed and chambered the Bevan King barrel. Shoots great with everything I tried in it. Shot a moose with it a few years ago but has been sitting at the back of the safe for a few years now since I got my .375 Ruger but I can't resign myself to sell it. I even stole the stock from the Whelen to put on the .375. Here's a pic of my Whelen when it still had the McMillan on.

Love that stock.

Just had to revive this fine thread !
I'm looking forward to shooting my new Whelen for the first time, its a Legendary Arms Professional brand spanking new.
With a 1.5-5 Leupold it weighs in at 7.5 lbs. and came with a removable brake so I am really curious as to what it handles like.
My old Whelen, a Remington Mod. 30 has been a family member since the early 1960s when Dad brought it home from a gun show over the Border.
It is probably 2 lbs.+ heavier than the new guy but is nice to shoot.
So, hopefully our crazy weather will clear up very soon..

If you decide you want to get rid of the old one let me know. Have a soft spot for those old Remingtons. - dan

It's like the old 270 vs 280 debate.

The 280 and 9.3 bring with them a bit of cool, but otherwise they don't offer much over the 270 and 35Whelen respectively. :)

I get more heat from the 338-06 crowd for my liking for the Whelen.
I sold my 338-06 because I didn't see a justifiable difference between it and the Whelen.

My 35 Whelen is just a homemade effort on a Mauser action but it is still one of my favourites. A 250 at 2500 shoots flat enough to do anything I want to do and it is just a classic cartridge. I've been carrying the rifle for the past thirty years and it carries some marks and it seems to be getting heavier but I still like to carry it.

I hope it work out well for you. I love my LAW in 300 wm. Fantastic rifle.
