The .375 Ruger discussion thread

2700-2750fps with H4350

RL 17 woudl get more.

Thanks. Barnes #4 lists their velocities with a 24" barrel - I picked up a couple pounds of Big Game which is listed only slightly behind H380 as top velocity, but is supposed to be temperature insensitive, unlike H380.

Any sources of load data for RL17?

In reality JP you're the first one on this thread with dancing banana's:rolleyes:.

Let's continue the discussion...........

I know Gatehouse has pimped up his .375 Ruger Alaskan with a McMillan stock. Anyone else customized their .375 Rugers yet?

the gunsmith here make a glass bedding and add an extra recoil on my LH 375 laminated stock will shoot it soon ...

I have the same rifle. I had mine glass bedded and the trigger done to just a shade over 3 lbs. by Guntech. Hope you like yours as much as I like mine!

Is it hard finding this in stock around alberta? I should probably start looking for a source for brass and projectiles.

http://www.ominecasourceforsports.com was where I got mine from, likely the only source for these bullets in Canada right now. Sadly, they are sold out as they proved to be a very popular item! They may well have KING brass in stock though....

Since Gatehouse's thread got shut down I thought we better keep a civilized and moderator friendly discussion going about this great cartridge.

I have a left hand Hawkeye Alaskan in .375 Ruger and hope to expand on my collection so far with other great firearms chambered in this cartridge:).

Continue the discussion's please..............

Everything's been discussed ad nauseam in the other thread with 1700 posts. Just because it's locked doesn't mean it can't be read for reference.
This one will get out of hand real quick, just wait and see. :)

My .375 Ruger is built on a JC Higgins(FN 98 Mauser) by Bill Leeper. Bill had a McGowan .375 blank in stock so that's what I went with. No regrets as the rifle is a fine shooter. Bill cut the barrel to 21" then profiled it to a .70" muzzle diameter.

I had the bolt handle replaced with a straight, Talley-style for looks and to save wear and tear on my knuckles during recoil. I also went with a Talley barrel band.

Bill worked his magic on the action and I can safely say that I have never had a rifle that functions so reliably or smoothly as this one. Capacity is 3+1. I specifically asked Bill to modify the extractor so that it would snap over the rim of a directly fed cartridge.

Other improvements include a Timney trigger at about 3lbs pull, flaring the cocking piece groove in the rear tang and tightening up the stock safety lever.

I modified the original stock by adding two internal cross-bolts and lengthening the pull by the use of an ebony spacer. I added a 1" Pachmayr Decellerator pad and reshaped the stock. I don't really care for this stock. It's drop at heel is too much for a hardish recoiling rifle. I plan on replacing the stock with a nice piece of English, hopefully by hunting season.

The rifle carries a Leupold VX II 2-7 scope with low Talley steel bases/rings.

Weight all up is right on 9 lbs.

As for loading for this rifle, I experimented with a number of bullet/powder combinations.

I'm getting +/- 2800 fps with RL17 and Hornady 270 gr IL's and +/- 2860 with RL15 and Nosler 260 gr AB's. I will be testing some RL17 with the Accubonds soon.

I have no doubt that 2900-2950 fps is possible this 250 gr bullets.

This isn't a "King" thread. It's just to discuss the .375 Ruger cartridge. If someone own's one or someone has an interest in it then it would be good discussion.

So far it's going well except for a few posts by folks bringing up a different thread. It someone feels like it's a beaten horse don't participate or read any of it. Pretty simple really;).

That's a beauty rifle Mauser98:cool:

Much Agreed! Keep the superior rifle arguement out of this one.

Just picked up some hornady brass from WS, and some 260 gr. accubonds. but it will be a while before my rifle shows up or I have a chance to do some reloading.

The 260 gr. .375 accubonds look so different from the 200 gr. .30 accubonds its unbelievable. The look twice as wide and 2/3 as long. I had to check the box twice.

I have a few boxes of once fired factory brass. I need to pick up some new brass soon.

Let us know how the accubonds work out for ya.

Id like to see your 300 gr. data.

I would actually like to try out the 300 gr. instead, and wouldnt mind trying a 300 gr. that was moving slower than 2700. I think for what I will be using it for the majority of the hunting with it will be 50-225 yards. And Ive seen what a .270 win does to meat at 20 yards before. It seems the concussion of a fast moving projectile although deadly, also often gels alot of meat and you have to be real picky about your shot.

Maybe this is a bit of perspective against the shot placement ideal. Ideally we all want the best placement, but real world situations often include a margin of compromise before the animal is gone. Ive let elk get away before because I couldnt line up an ethical shot, its a real piss off, but later you know you did the right thing. If I hunted solely on the basis of the perfect shot Id have to spend alot more time hunting, or id be a vegetarian.

Basically Id like to find something with great takedown power that wont wreck too many steaks or roasts ;) and when hunting elk that seem to be able to cover a fair bit of ground when you dont have the perfect shot placement, who also like to run down the dense brush of river valley's, takedown power is kinda the direction im looking to build ammo for.

I do think the 260's would do a great job at this as well, but the 300's might perform a hair better in terms of takedown, so eventually i will give them a try. I havent heard any first hand results in comparison of the two yet.

Any thoughts?

One of the first loads I shot out of my .375 Ruger was using 67 gr of Varget behind a 300 gr Hornady RN. Velocity was 2350 fps and accuracy was sub moa. This combination would be an excellent choice for close shots.

a 9,3x62 on the performance side. did you try the RL17 with that combo without pushing it too much ?

Nice, how do you like the hornady RN's? I havent seen many options locally for .375 300gr projectiles.

I have one built on a mod 70 action, 24" pachnor barrel, hogue over moulded stock Leupold vx3 1.75 - 6 x 32(i think)... i am shooting sierra 300gr game kings over h414 with great results, no problem being sub moa, killed two does with it this past fall, and it wasn't too hard on the edible parts, both were over 300 yards though... i think at 60 yards i may have seen some light bruising throughout the entire deer. This gun is beggin me to kill a big black bear this spring. I keep on thinking putting a higher mag scope on it to try it at 400 - 600 yards... just to see what it'll do
its a slick little round for sure!

Who built the rifle for you and what was the donor action originally chambered for?
How many rounds does it hold in it's magazine?
