This is the story of my $500 Precison Rifle.

It begins a bunch of years ago when I walked in to a LGS to chat with the friendly gunsmith. I noticed a plastic bin containing the pieces of a disassembled rifle. When I asked about this sad looking pile of parts, the story I got was that the owner had somehow managed to get a round stuck in the chamber so badly that the Smith had to completely disassemble the thing to get the round out. It was a Savage so that included removing the bbl from the action.

As a result of the stuck round, the owner was now afraid to shoot the rifle again. I was told that the thing was literally brand new and had only about 25 rds through it. Upon close inspection it was clear there was nothing wrong with the bbl or chamber.

I told the Smith that I'd buy the thing for $500. A few weeks later my offer was accepted and I was the owner of a nearly new Savage Precision Carbine in 308 Win ... or at least the pieces of one. :)

With the help of the Smith we reassembled the rifle, setting up the headspace properly in the process. I ordered a Sightron SIII 16x mil dot scope to complete the package.

The only 30 cal components I happened to have lying around were Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tips and Varget so I made up a few test loads. Right from the beginning the rifle produced consistent 5/8" 5-shot groups. Job done. :)

At one time I considered bedding the stock but the weird Accustock system didn't lend itself to that treatment and the rifle was accurate as it was so I left the thing as it came from the factory. I haven't even touched the trigger because it was so good out of the box.

Where this story gets interesting is when we took it long range shooting. Conventional wisdom says a short 20" barrel and lightweight bullets are no good for extended ranges. However I think this rifle has proved that to be wrong.

This rifle and the 125gr Ballstic Tips are more than capable of ringing a 1/2 sized IPSC sillouhette at 700 yds and we even put hits onto a 16" square gong at 800 yds. The best shots of the day were on a 6" gong at 700 yds. My wife picked up the rifle and plugged that tiny plate right in the centre with her first shot.

Last season, just for fun I switched to 208 Amax bullets just to see how far the Precision Carbine could go. Wind permitting it is possible to make reloable hits on the 1/2 sized IPSC sillouhette at 1050 yds. The longest shot I connected was on a couch sized rock at 1200 yds. I have scoped out a 1400 yd shooting location but need to find a suitable target.

The lesson of the $500 precision rifle is that while a spendy custom rifle in a gigantic magnum cartridge may be nice, it is not needed in order to shoot long distances.

Interesting story, thanks Suputin. $500 and some good and hard work by a couple people, eh? (you and the gunsmith). :)

What do you need? I'll bring the target, you show me your spot. ;)

Would love to shoot some distance like that..

I've shot with you at 1000 yds a bunch of times.

Sadly it's not my spot, it is a friend of a friend so I can't go any time I want. :(

I am looking to pick up a full sized IPSC steel for the longer ranges. That 1/2 sized silhouette is a ##### to hit in the wind.

It is pretty amazing what you can do with a 20" .308. I've gone 10/10 at 870 yards on my 2/3 IPSC plate with my 20" Rem 700 shooting 178 gr Amaxs. Made hits past 1000 in matches as well. It's a lot easier in my spot though where the wind is real tame than down in South-Eastern Washington where the wind is crazy.

What powder are you using for your 208 amax loads? I am looking to experiment with a box. I have heard only reloader 17 can deliver the velocities needed out of a 308. Great story. Thanks

A few pics from last weekend.

Half size IPSC silhouette at 700 yds. Load was 125gr Ballistic Tip over Varget with match primer and case prep.

16" square plate at 800 yds

And by far the hardest of all. 6" gong at 700 yds. All three of us managed to hit this one at least twice. Pretty damn good for a totally stock, $500 rifle. :)

Even at 700 yds, the 125gr Ballistic Tips are fragile enough and moving fast enough to turn to dust when they hit the plate. A couple of .30 cal bullet tails recovered at the plate.

Have you got anything capable of really long distance? That location offers potential to shoot as far as you can sling a bullet. A mile or maybe even 2000yds is easily doable. I don't have anything bigger than the 308 and 1500yds + is really pushing it with that.

Good shooting by you both. Congrats on the shooting AND purchasing an accurate rifle cheap.

I have shot a few task specific rifles yet I personally own a Savage Mod 10 and a Remy 700. I've been impressed by the accuracy down range by both.

Beautiful open range. Must be nice to have that available. Here, depending on the cows, I can do 500m with an odd opportunity at just over 900m.

Outstanding!!

Note that "Gear" comes last.

Thanks for sharing your success, I love when good shooters with "average" guns make hits!

Alberta really is long range shooting country. I have personally shot out to 2000 yds. We have the room to go a lot further, just not the equipment. Not very many rifles can exceed that and any that can, I am unable to afford. :(

The place we were shooting, my buddy starts out at 700 yds and we move back from there. He is so good, he doesn't even bother with shorter distances. He was on the IPSC silhouette with his second round and I think he hit the 6" gong on the first attempt. There are days I hate him. :)

We just have a lot of opportunity. Huge open spaces and lots of available targets. Shooting gophers is a really good way to develop field shooting skills. You have to flop down on uneven ground, calculate range and windage and then make a rapid shot on a water bottle sized target that rarely stands still. The good side is there are thousands upon thousands of potential targets out in a field. :)

I think I would love Alberta, it's just my kind of culture and terrain. Always raised registered cattle and AQHA cutting horses. Married a Canadian lady and she won't leave Bantario.

I will have to live vicariously thru your posts, lol.

It'd have to be a supermodel of a lady to get me to live in Ontario, let alone f'n Toronto. Nope, nope, and more nope to that place.

Nothing for 2000. But I would love to get my 6.5 Creed out past 1000,just to see . Suppose to be flatter than my Win mag. Put some new glass on it and am raring to go ;)

Would a Toronto Sun Sunshine Girl qualify?lol

However I agree about the GTA of Bantario, worst place I've ever lived except for the people. I don't live in the asylum itself but in the GTA.

Anyway I'm still working on an escape plan.....
