The 760/7600 Club

If I was looking to get into this club over the next two years, would it be better to look for a 760 or a 7600? I am really hoping to pick one up in .35 Whelen, but budget and the market will dictate that.

I have one in 35 Whelen, but am thinking of purchasing another one, possibly a 760.
Does the 760 have a free floating barrel like the 7600, and is the bolt cover also plastic on the 760?

here is my rough 1954 model 760 in 300sav that I have had for over 20years.

In the late 80s I was out helping my grandfather build docks on Lake of the woods and he reached down through some old life jackets and rope in his old boat and came up with this rifle and asked if I wanted it.
I looked at the old gun and it was rough so I hummed and hawed. he said that old gun has shot lots of deer and moose, so I said sure I'll take it.

I shot a big bull moose in 96 with this gun, the rack on the moose measured 56 1/2" across and I shot another bull in 2000

A couple weeks ago, with the hounds on hot pursuit these two fellas came running up to the wrong end of my 760 in .308. The other guys later said that when they heard the shots they were wondering who was shooting the "semi-auto"! :D:D:D LOL!

my 760 carbine

My 760 Carbine A7395### In 30.06 with a synthtic stock and a bushnell red dot....Love the rifle....I bought it used about 8 years ago and I still have the original furniture and the see thru scope mounts that came with it..I had it parkerized and the furniture mounted a couple of years ago by Jeff Smith in Petawawa and am very happy with it
Shot a nice 10 point at about 175 yards with it a few years ago..its been a really nice and light bush rifle for me ....

QUESTION: My co-worker bought a 760 in .270. It was in rough shape and he is refinishing it. He got it stripped but can't get the forend tube off. Any ideas on how it's held in there? Apparently it looks like a rod with indents or something. He didn't want to force anything without knowing how to remove it properly.

I know the professional gunsmiths with cringe when I say this. Last year I had to take apart my 1972 vintage 760. It too was seized. I put the receiver in a padded vice but not tight. Penetrating oil where the tube screwed in. I used a tapered punch through the 4 holes as leverage. Still did not come loose so I used a benzomatic propane soldering torch and gave it a tiny bit of head and lots of twist and it loosened. Looked like thread locking compount was on it.

The holes were a little deformed so I filed the outside around them and then some cold bluing.

Hope this helps.
