The 760/7600 Club

Love the 7600. I own 2. 243 for coyotes, 30.06 for moose and deer. Great rifles. Many, many eastern deer and moose have fallen to one of these. I wondered why I saw so many trucks the last time I was in Alberta....

Can I join 1 I just bought a model 14 in 30 rem and will be buying a 32 at the end of the month and I'm looking for a 25 & 35. Then I'll start looking for some 14 1/2's.Oh MY GOD I'M HOOKED AGAIN!!!!

Got Lucky

The stars were aligned. I finally found the gun I was looking for.
A NIB 7600 in 280 calibre. Just received it tonight, one of the few times I was happy to see a UPS truck. The gun came in the original box, the envelope with the owners manual had not been opened. The fellow who owned the gun previously must have been a heavy smoker, as I could smell smoke odor on the box and envelope. Friday I will trying out the gun. Can't wait!!!

I guess I can finally join the club.

I was in the club...but left it due to my first and second replacement rifle not taking kindly to reloading. To test I shot 40 rounds with factory and 40 rounds of brand new brass. The rifle grouped wonderfully (2" at 300 yards). But the second reloads (factory or the new) showed major case failure about 1/4" from the case head. My loads were not about 10% from maximum manuals and quite moderate. out of 40 cases, I could only save 7 all the rest were too stretched and no longer safe to shoot.

So I left the club after determining the rifle is perfect for shooters who do not reload, or one shot factory brass. Not for me. Sorry.

That is not the norm for these, and I believe you had a headspace issue. I have loaded plenty for a few of them, and some cases have over 20 firings on them.

Agreed, same here. I haven't really counted how many reloads but I haven't run in to any issues as described. My 760 in .300 sav had a case rupture once, but that's what I get for shooting vintage ammo out of it (some old factory loaded dominion from the dawn of time).

When I bought first rifle, I had checked and for the most parts reports were good. My father had an old 760 (??) and we reloaded constantly for it.

My first one blew out cases some new and some second or third reloads (from another rifle). That was alarming, so I tested with brand new factory (Winchester and Federal) and new brass reloads. Each showed signs of headspace problems. I sent it to Gravel's. They replaced it with a brand new rifle.

I undertook the same tests, and the results were identical to the first 7600. I took to a gunsmith and he felt that, after some measurements on mine and another on his rack, this issue may be inherent to the newer rifles.

The rifle was a great shooter. 2" with 75 gr V-Max at 300 yards. Just not great for reloading. Just not acceptable in my books.:(

One day I might join said club, The FIL has a 760 in .308win, and the BIL doesn't have a firearms licence. I would have to see what it prints on paper after who knows how many times a coat hanger has been rammed down the barrel. It would get a new 7mm barrel if it were mine.

Sobo,

not saying you did not have a real problem, you cleary did if you had case failure after 3 or 4 reloadings. I think the pump guns may err on the large side of chamber specs whilst still staying within tolerance. I think if you couple this with a tight FL die you may see a slighty more pronounced ring 1/4 inch from the case base. I'm guessing this is where you had case failure?

Headspace is easy to measure and I very much doubt that Remington is producing new guns with incorrect headspace on a regular basis. Did you try just bumping the shoulders back a smidgon with your die?

I'm guessing you were shooting 243. I have one which is only at most 3 years old and headspace is good.

Edit: I just thought I would add. The barrels on these rifles are extremely accurate. Remington definetly know how to make a good barrel.
