The 760/7600 Club

I am an ex-member of the club, my first hunting rifle was a 760 Gamemaster in 30-06. The last few years I have been trying to rejoin this club and have been looking for the 760 in a 280 Remington and the 257 Roberts. Probable the 2 hardest to find. Currently looking at one in 308 Win. Thinking it might be a nice bush rifle for my moose hunt this August.

On a side note:
Still kicking my ass for selling the 30-06

Warrenb,

I thought of that with my first 7600 and also measured the casings. You are correct in that they did not appear to be to far out of spec, so to speak. I consulted with two gunsmiths and had one check the headspace. One I spoke to referenced the chamber oversizing and possible need to index the barrel. The other, whom I bought the gun from, noted that checking the headspace on a 7600 is a bit tricky and his results were inconclusive. In looking at the rifle (with the mag out) I noted that the bolt does have a slight movement when closed.

The bottom line was that we sent it to Gravel's and they replaced it. The replacement performed similarly. On second shot, the casing (about 1/4" from the head), regardless of whether the first shot was new factory or new brass, had a noticeable "bump" in that area. You could feel the bump where the case had stretched and would fail. Two rifles, with the same problem (maybe from the same batch) I dunno, that was the tale of the tape for me.

And yes, you are right, the barrels are fantastic as they are truly free floating and are good, fast shooters.

We gotta get some pics on this thread again. These are some of the "ultra hunting rifles" in my opinion. The 7600 isn't the fancy rifle that some folks like to show off to their friends, but I am amazed at how many of they guys I have met over the years who are genuine meat hunters use them. These are the guys that know their animals and really know hunting and it is interesting to see them totin' their 760/7600's. In northern SK, I see the 7600 in about every hunting party. I do get some funny looks when I break out my 7600 weathermaster though as it seems to be an abomination to some of the old timers.

More pics please.

Being forced a left hander due to a eye problem on the right side, I continued to shoot right handed guns for years. Then I fired my friends 760 and the rest is history. All the bolt actions are sold off and I have a little collection of 760/7600 going. I would like to add a weathermaster but for some reason in canada the sellers think they are worth a lot more money than they really are.
They seem to think they were classed above the wood stock versions when new when in fact they were priced just a bit more than a black syn but less than a wood stock 7600.
I had a chance to buy one when they came out in 2004?? in 308 and kick my butt every since that I didnot. take care

New 280

Took the new gun to the range today. Very pleased with it, seems to shoot straight. Learnt you have to pump the gun aggressively, worked flawlessly.
Will be putting a scope on it with Leupold QR mount. Haven't decided what scope to use. Leaning towards a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32. Let me know what you think of this scope. My only problem now, find more time to go shooting!!!

Nice choice in scopes, I personally run a VXII 1-4. This gun is only used in the bush were shots are 0-100yds that's why I have the low power. You could also look at the VX3 1.5-5, nice scope to.

I always wanted one of these, would love to get one in 30/06 .. how would one work with a bipod/shooting stick, does it affect the pump mechanism at all?

Here's my baby. I love it.

Learnt you have to pump the gun aggressively

My 2 uncles that have owned 760's for upwards of 25 years told me "Work em like you wanna brake em!" I'm not sure why? When I press the slide release the action slides open like its got KY jelly on it! :p Maybe I should stop cleaning it and reading it bedtime stories?! :p

Yep, pump 'em like you mean it and you will not have a jam and you won't have a problem with short stroking under pressure. You can't baby these guns if you wan't reliability.

I have hunted with my 760 in 308 win for over 20 years...never failed me and I don't baby my rifle...it hunts all weather. I just bought a 7600 in 243 for yotes....I love these guns.

Butch

I just joined the club with a 760 in 30-06 carrying a Weaver K3 scope on top. It came with 2 mags and 100 rounds of ammo (mostly old Dominion brand in the orginal boxes and some Norma) for $226 tax inclusive!

I wasn't sure if I was seeing properly, but the buddy with me confirmed that it was for real and that everything on the gun was sound. Since it's on consignment, we'll just have to wait a couple of days for the transfer to go through to pick her up. It looks like she'll make a good bush gun come deer season......
