Neat old cartridge.
I’ve got this old Ruger 77 that was handloaded a long time ago with Imr4350 and the original Barnes X 140 gr bullets. Shot well but I’m looking to push this little gun to the next level with a bullet and powder switch.
What are you guys shooting in this cartridge?
I’d love to see some of your rifles as well.

7mm Mauser's reputation was pretty much created with 173/175 RN bullets at about 2,300 fps or so. That, apparently, was the ammo used for most all the "hunting exploits". Rigby renamed it the .275 Rigby, apparently "High Velocity", by loading 139/140 grains to claimed 2,900-sh. I was getting pretty consistent 2,800 fps with 150 gr. Nosler Partitions and RL-19 from 22" Ruger #1 - load was pretty much right out of Nosler manual. If that is not enough for what you need, then you actually want a bigger cartridge or bigger bore - 280, 284, 7x64, 7mm Rem Mag all come to mind with that bore size.
You should be able to get 3,000 with the Nosler 120 Hunting Ballistic Tips or similar, if the speed is what you are after. A 7x57 is not a 300 Win Mag, a 338 Win Mag or a 375 H&H - a very good shooter and an above average hunter can probably get similar results, but that is about what is behind the butt plate, not what is ahead of it...

Ballistic twin of the 7.08. Believe the mauser has 1gr more water volume than the 7.08. The reputation is probably due to a nice range of projectile size in a low recoiling....thus accurate caliber. Excellent for the recoil shy such as women or youth.

There is a New Zealand game culler/guide/gunsmith, Nathan Foster. He has done a lot of game performance studies with many calibers. Believe his pet for the 7.08/x57 is the 150 Nosler partition and for a long range load, the 162 Amax. Not sure if the Amax is made any more, but Hornady's(?) Eldx would be close.

Someone is bound to chime in with Bell using the mauser/275 rigby to shoot elephant during colonial ivory .....poaching. He used large 175gr military FMJ to body shoot Elephant for ivory. Let them die over days, recovering the ivory with the assistance of vultures. Not a example to be quoting, or a method anyone in Kanada would advocate.

Mine is a M77 mkII. Have not developed a load for it yet. Hoping to work my wife up to it.

I've got several 7X57's, both old military sporters and new production. I'm guessing the published loads are a bit cautious due to the old rifles around - it would be interesting to compare with 7-08 load data.I've had good luck with H4350 and mid-weight pills in the 140 grain range. I particularly like the Hornady flat base spire points for accuracy. I've also had good luck with the heavy 175 gr pills, however, I am not sure they would be a good choice for hunting, as they may be better suited for the big hitters in the 7 mm category such as the 280 Rem and the 7 mm mag...

Nosler shows 4gr difference in water capacity between the 2. 7x57 can be loaded stout in a decent action, no worries there.

My ruger #1 in 7x57 shoots the 175gr hornady interlock at 2600 fps with a healthy dose of imr 4350. Never feel under gunned with it. Great handling classic rifle and cartridge combo.

If i were to ever switch or in my case do have another rifle in 7x57 to load, Id be looking at 154Gr interlocks @2800 or 160gr accubond @ 2700fps.

This is a small white tail buck claimed by my 7x57 a few years back.

Never really looked up the water capacity before. You would think that, with equal pressure, performance levels might follow? From Nosler 7, using 150 grain bullets, water capacity at listed cartridge over-all length:
7mm-08 = 47.8
7x57 = 51.4
284 Win = 57.6
280 Rem = 62.6
280 Rem AI = 64.8
7mm WSM = 73.5
7mm Rem Mag = 78.0
7mm Weatherby = 81.4

I hacve used everything from 145 Speers to 160 Game Kings and everything died quickly with one shot, love the 7X57!
I had a Ruger number one re-barreled with a Paul Marquart barrel , should never have gotten rid of that rifle.
I have a M11 M77 languishing in my gun vault at thee moment.....

I have taken a lot of game with the 7x57, including 8 moose and 3 Elk, plus several Black bears and many deer of all 3 BC species.
I have 2 7x57 rifles at present, one is a 700 "Classic" from Remington, the other is a Winchester Featherweight.
In a 22" barrel on a modern action, 140s will usually make 2900+, 150s 2800, 160s 2700, and 175s 2600. I prefer Norma MRP
but there are many powders that work well. Lately, I have been playing with Reloder 17 with 140s, and it shows promise. Dave.

Sorry, Kamlooky, my wife was along on that trip - that meant having to have clean socks, clean underwear and the "dressed-up for Sunday Meeting" rifle. The highlights you mention are on the beater .303 rattling around in my side-by-side...

I have several 7x57's.
My Interarms Mark X shoots Sierra 160 Spitzer's almost through the same hole at 100yds.
Haven't played with the Ruger Tang Safety yet. Been messing around with BRNO's, Winchesters, & CZ's.

I have 2 7mm's 7x57 and 7x64, both Zastava's but the x64 is stainless.
The 7x57 shoots a bit better with the lighter pills, but the x64 is the bomb with 175's.

Looks like I've got the same model rifle as you, OP. Scored off the EE here many moons ago.

Great shooter with some vintage Dominion 139 gr factory ammo [5/8" 3 shot group @ 100 yds] but haven't worked up any loads for it yet.
