I love my savage mark ii fv, not sure I like the stock all that much though. The cheek pad is too low, and as seen above an ajustable cheek rest is needed. I also just had problems with the stock warping and touching the barrel. Savage will however make good and replace it under warranty.
There is another option though; another version is available with a wood stock called the mark ii tr. I have only seen it online, but the stock's dimensions look better proportioned.
Aside from the stock's issues, the mark ii fv shoots well and has had rave reviews by many.
If you go with a centerfire remington 700, you'll find that there are endless ways to customize for precision. Rebarrelling will need to be done by a gunsmith but things like bedding can be done at home.
