Fads for AR's are a constant drone in the gun word. Rails, M4gery's, magpul, pistons, it just keeps going and going. I can't wait until the US army adopts a new rifle so that can become the newest best thing ever, better then everything else.

Like most things the most sincerest form of flatery is imitation.
Rails came out of Military needs - and then split into ones trying to outdo KAC, and ones trying to make money off civilians thinking they needed a rail.
Pretty much most stuff people add to an AR is worthless, for what they do with it.
There is nothing wrong with the DI system, I loved my C7/C8's way more than I liked my C1A1 - its piston was a PITA to clean and the gun itself never loved me.
That said these days there are potentially better systems out there than the M16FOW. The issue is whether the huge increase in cost is worth the value added.
While the replacement cost of the Hk416 upper is not great, the Mk16 FN SCAR or other non similar systems will have a great logistical train.
The question is whether or not - taking that money and putting it into training, and maitenance budgest would have a greater reward for the soldier on the ground.

I picked up a handguard mounted rail, but didn't really use it, and don't see much point. I use my rifles at the range, and for that, I don't need a flashlight, a laser, night vision capability (cool though it may be)
The AR's I play with for the most part are basically full-length 20" uppers, with no real fancy bits added on. *shrug* Less to get in my way, break or have to carry around.

I think the piston use is just an excuse to not clean your rifles as often as some should
