I'm a full customs guy, but Ruger never fails to impress, you usually don't even have to look very hard. Why Rugers sell for what they do, and aren't considered a premium brand over other contemporary brands still boggles my mind. All of mine are rock solid reliable, gorgeous guns of a level of quality I just don't find in many other makers. Especially at their price! Even more interesting is I know there are guys on here with Rugers that outdo mine handily, all in a production rifle that sells at typically zero premium.

Thanks, me too, my busiest rifle. Hasn't missed taking a big game animal each year since I bought her, and has taken as many as a half dozen or more in its best year so far. 2011, it took three, we'll see what 2012 brings.

Yep, the #1s have some of the nicest wood of any production and even some custom rifles. You notice though that the #1s in particular all used to have above average wood, but you have to look at a lot of 77s to find an exceptional one? I had some old Sakos, L61Rs that had truly amazing wood but alas they are long gone and no pics to remember.

One of the Lipseys 77 RSI's. This piece of wood should never have made it past the initial stages of stock-making, let alone out of the Ruger factory.

Luckily for me, Prophet River thought so too, and replaced it

Looks good, but like c-fbmi just said about mod.77's, not spectacular. Still, much better that what I had.

Yep, for sure, RSMs are the same as #1's for wood beauty I find, select Circassian. That says more for the No.1 than the RSM, as the RSM retailed at twice what the No.1 does, so the No.1 is indeed a premium offering, budget priced. Both my Gold Labels are quite pretty, though not exceptional.

I believe Number 1s are easier to get nice wood for because they are short pieces. Bolt guns require a much longer piece of wood to make a stock than a number 1 does. I love my Number 1 in .358 Norma Magnum.
