The ATC Chronicles

I would have asked them for a list first.
ATC providers don't generally list that service even if they have a website. You should get a list back shortly.

Not sure what you are referring to?

Anyways here is todays update:

Aug 24:
It turns out the only guy at Genesee that completed that training has passed on, so I have been forced to email the CFO for Alberta for a list of qualified individuals that complete this type of training. This is already turning into a wild goose chase...

Going through this fresh, you may be in the best position to become the new instructor, if you're up for it. Keep the chain going, so to speak.

Thanks for writing this, and to everyone else who wrote their experiences, for the collective record. Great info.

Finally found a local guy to do the training. I spoke with him and he sounds like a great instructor. Still waiting for my bloody holster to come in the mail so that is what is holding me up at this point.

Yes I would also say good for you sir. Sounds like a wild goose chase and a bit painful... but the more ppl doing it the better it might get. Cheers.

Small update, hopefully will have Yukon and BC permits soon, Quebec will be very difficult. Taking the course/test Wednesday so we will see how that goes. I am all practiced up.

Updated again. Apologies for the upside down and sideways photos. I corrected them on photobucket but they do not seem to correct here for some reason.

i've tested a couple of trappers in bc the trappers contacted the cfo's office who sent them the paper work, no course required we just went to the range for the proficiency test. the trappers then did a telephone interview with someone from the cfo's office
i don't remember the time frame $40.00 later they got their permits. they said during the interview the gentleman from the cfo,s office were concerned about the type of holster they would be using they have to be outside your coat in plain site even on a snowmobile.
i recommended to them that they visit the local detachment and show them their permit and where they operate and give the rcmp a heads up because guaranteed some soccer mommy snowmobiler or crosscoutry skier sees them there will be an issue

In Alberta (unless it has recently changed) you don't necessarily need an instructor to witness your proficiency test. It can be anyone with a restricted licence who owns the same type of handgun you are testing with. Meaning if I test with a revolver the witness must own a revolver.

I understood that I didn't have to do it with an instructor, however I did because I wanted to be properly trained, especially for proper drawing technique. I forgot to add also that for Quebec you have to provide maps of where you will be with outlined operating areas and a list of potentially dangerous wildlife for every application and thus every trip you go on. Their requirments are impossible to meet. I will likely send their CFO a letter about it.

They will either ignore you or simply tell you to #### off. Québec's CFO is the Sûreté du Québec. The higher-ups are a real bunch of bullies with a serious god complex, who, as you found out, prefer their citizens dead and rotting rather than alive and well.

Hello to the SQ office drone who's gonna read this.

Maybe try giving the office a call. I've found everyone there to be very helpful and polite whenever I call. When I needed my ATC for the coming weekend(filed late) I just explained my situation and a temporary ATC was in my inbox within the hour. YMMV

I got a call last week from the Yukon CFO and he basically made sure I had to carry a pistol and couldn't carry a shotgun. He awarded me my ATC after our conversation.
