I got this guy a week before the season closed last june. The 1st encounter I had with him I was checking my batteries for solar powered electric fence and he walked 3ft beside me and me with no rifle. A few days later I was driving my ATV around the fence and saw him lieing on the side hill so I thought he had been shot by someone else. I shut ATV off and loaded my rifle and walked up the hill. He never moved and I wasnt being quiet by any means. I walked right up to him and poked him in the head with the barrel of my rifle. He didn't move so I started to turn around to walk back to my ATV and he started to get up. I swung around and shot him at point blank range like 1ft away ! Then the work started getting him out, hung up skinned and off to the butcher. I'll probably never shoot another bear so figured get a rug done and find a nice place to hang it or whatever. It was quite the experience that's for sure ! He was just shy of 450 lbs so a good sized bear. Going to get his skull done and send the 2 teeth into the mnr and get the age printout.

Crazy you just walked up on him. I shot one with the intention of only getting 1 but now it’s 1 or 2 every season. I enjoy going out in the spring. Nice rug btw.

Holy C thats a hell of a story. Lucky to be alive both times and man thats a nice rug. Your adrenaline must have been through the roof.

A couple of buddies of mine have a similar story to tell, thet were moose hunting a cutline in north west Ab bush country. Came upon a pile of moose guts from somebody else's kill, there was also a bear laying 30 ft from the gut pile & they thought it was just a bear kill someone had taken off the guts and left for the ravens as well...that is until one of them walked over to the bear and gave it a kick to see how stiff it was...that bear exploded out of his bed and in one jump was back in the bush unharmed.
They surmised that the bear had had a big feed of moose guts & then just layed down for a "full belly" snooze.
