I have a cut down m14 which I'm trying to use as a scout squad kinda rifle. I have the SA scout mount and am now looking/researching/drooling for the optics. What Red dot system with little to no magnification is sturdy enough to hold zero while mounted on a semi-auto .308? I heard the m14's are brutal on scopes ie "the scope killers". Let me know what info/suggestions you may have. Many thanks!

Just to be different, I have a Nightforce 1-4x24 on one, awesome optics for this purpose. 4x magnification can really help when shooting 300+ yards (which is no problem for a 308). The 1x is as close to a true 1x as you will find as well, and I experience no eye strain when shooting both eyes open.

a T1 or a TRS25 .. small dot so its not going to add much weight.. ( important since the m14 is a pig to begin with ) .. the smaller dot sizes mean you wont be obscuring your targets further out say 200-300m ( if you can see them )..

The strikefire is mounted to a promag (arms18 clone) mount
over 200 rounds fired, holds zero, dot is crisp, 300 yard gong no problem, comes up on aim super quick,

All will agree with the quality of that scope but it can't be mounted as a scout scope.

For what's he's looking for, I'd choose a CompML3 or TriPower on a Ultimak rail so I can cowitness the iron sights.
With the SAI scout mount, Satain probably picked the best red-dot.

Sh*t, you're right, my bad.

what about the Vortex strikefire? will I have issues mounting it on a scout mount?

Also, all of these are paralax free, so there wouldnt be a need to co-witness irons to fully align witht he target, right?

To me Vortex is a lesser brand but I never tried one and I think it's well regarded.
I don't know the Strikefire but if it's a red-dot, it should mount nicely.

You're right, as long as you see the dot, it will shoot at the dot. I like to be able to cowitness because I can still aim if the red-dot turns off, offset or break. Also allow to turn off the dot and dial your rear sight to a longer range.

WoW! thats a great sight picture and I can see a lot of the target/red dot/front post & rear peep and line up all of that!

Like I keep on saying Co-Witness is Co-B.S.
Have your red dot on a QD mount so if it fails you can ditch the pig and get back to shooting. Now if that's really hard to figure out try Leopold's etched reticule so if the battery does die than at least the reticule is still there but it does have a set eye relief.
Oh yeah the reason for a red dot optic is to have a clear field of view with an easy to see dot to quickly aquire a moving target at close range and enguage QUICKLY!

Great pics! It's such a good comparison to the micros and the standard RDS sight and how small they really are! Also very valid point with co-witnessing. To avoid the sights getting in the way (ie co-witnessing) is it advisable to get a higher mount to clear the sights, or just ignore them when aiming on the target?

Dialing down the rear aperture should get you pretty clear. But that's only with the Ultimak rail. Your SAI scout mount is higher than that so you probably can't cowitness anyway.

Satain, we'll never agree on that but I appreciated your pictures. Considering your opinion, I'd guess these nice rifles are not yours! :p
