The big deer of BC's Coast

Sorry if we got off on the wrong foot. I was not referring to Natives exercising their rights. Carverk I didn't know you were First Nations at first. I was referring to the ones market hunting, killing large amounts of deer and selling them. These also are night hunting to get away with this practice. These are the ones I have an issue with and has turned me off going there. It seems little is being done to deal with this problem. That is what I was addressing and if that is the case, then Yes I will take a moral stand on this. Cheers.

It okay jones
It sum times seams like natives are targets on CGN
We don't like poacher selling deer either if hunting for food take all you need is okay
If we don't sand up fore are self and exert are rights we will lose them and we can't afford to lose any more

Fish and wildlife has a draw fore one bear a year that's it
so if you are the one luck guy you will have a amassing hunt
No local hunting at all sum farmers in Tell will shot the odd one

Hmm too bad. I love our peninsula bears. Good taste and nice amount of fat to render in the fall. I guess thats both islands too. A buddy told me the elk are plentiful but in boggy hard to get to areas. Sounds fun too.

Not meny guys go fore Elk it is a realy hard hunt ther is nothing fun about it but if you want to test your skills and see how good you realy are it's a grate test

I feel the need to clarify a few things. There are still good sized deer here, a few 5x5's are harvested every year. Depending on what areas you hunt, you will run into some small deer, even for Sitka Blacktail as we have a large, very isolated population.

For hunting here, the only thing I would say is show some respect. I have seen far too many times, the entire front half of deer tossed away by off-island hunters. Literally found a stack of 20 in an old rock pit. And then there are the arrogant dummies who shoot anything they see, including babies because they are an "introduced species".

As for night hunting, it is not allowed here by native or non-native hunters. There is a misconception here that native hunters are allowed to hunt at night. A native group out east won a court battle because they were able to prove that they used to hunt using torches. Not the case here. If you are caught, vehicle, firearms, deer will be confiscated and you will get fined and get yourself a date with the judge. All of the same rules apply, except the limit and season, but any ethical hunter still only hunts within season.

I agree that there needs to be a more effective method of herd control here. Many people are against doe hunting, but it is necessary for the health and numbers of the deer. I gladly and openly hunt does, and catch flak over it because I'm not killing all of the big bucks :) If you come hunting here, enjoy it! Enjoy the islands, enjoy your harvest. It's a beauty of a place!

And just to clarify, I too am a local native, avid hunter/gatherer.

I know my old carving partner got charged with hunting at night
When he told me the judge Dismissed The charges because he was only exercising his rights
He wanted me to go hunting with them I knew that we he was going to be hunting at night
So I called to game warden and asked them out right if it was legal or not
I was told by The game warden that it is something that they would not encourage me to do but at the same time I would not be charged for it as long as it was not on the highway or near homes or permanent buildings
But you are right it is something that is not encouraging rarely done but it does happen once in a while
I to think the island and the people here are amazing when I go off island I can't go for long till I start missing it to much
And if we did Hunt more doe's we would have a bigger and healthier population
With less logging going on on the island that too has had an effect on the number of deer harvest each year last year I only got one deer but that was because I went moose hunting and one Moose was enough for my family

I guarantee it will blow your socks off not many guys have experienced deer hunting like this
All day hunts high in the mountains and you fill all your tags in one day if you want to

I'm not greedy. We can spread it out a few days. Maybe some time for fishing, too. :).

My gas card will get a workout. :)

I was going to say you pay for the gas lol
I'm sure I could convince my buddy to take us out halibut fishing
I didn't think you mainlanders liked fishing haahaaa

I grew up on the south coast, we always had boats. We spent many months sailing and fishing from the San Juan Islands to the north end of Vancouver Island and everything in between! :)

Been to Langara a few times too. ;)
