Sadly, I have no pic to start this thread off with (yet), but I do have a VZ24 on the way, my first surprisingly.

These have been recently imported in bulk in a captured com bloc refurb format (some say Russian refurb, others say 1950's Romanian refurb) so there ought to be a LOT of CGNers with examples to show off, ideally with both Romanian and Czech markings.

It'd be even more great to see a vet bring back...?

So let's see those VZ pics!!!

I'm a little surprised these aren't more popular or talked about while RC K98's are. These were typically made at the Bystrica and BRNO factories from 1936 to 1943 when the Germans ordered production switched to a standard K98k, but these all saw service in either the Whermacht or the Czech or Romanian Legions on the Eastern Front - they are every bit as much a Nazi Mauser as a dot or dou K98k.
 
Ok. Here are some pics of my VZ 24's. Sorry about the hypnotic rug in my gunroom. I had wanted to take the pics outside, but the lighting just wasn't very good right now. Just DON'T STARE INTO THE RUG and you should be fine.:p

The first one is my "RC" VZ 24. The stock and reciever match, the bolt is electro-penciled to match. I took some pics to show off the beautiful grain and tiger striping. There is some minor pitting on the bolt, but the action is super smooth and tight.

This one is my rare Guatemalan VZ 24. It has no finish left and the stock is pretty well black. None of the pitting is very deep and surprisingly the bore and chamber are shiny. It shoots very well.

This is one I picked up from the Wolverine surplus sale. It had sat there unloved for some time and John gave me a super deal on it, so I took it home. It turned out to be very interesting but is in very poor condition and basically a wall hanger. It was one of the dirtiest milsurps I've ever cleaned. While cleaning I found a small piece of paper stuffed down the cleaning rod hole with Chinese writing on it. There are also possible Chinese characters on the stock and the bolt is definitely a Chiang Kai-shek replacement. It has been used hard and poorly maintained, but must have a ton of history with it.

Last two pics! This is actually my daughter's. Her first milsurp at age 12. Plain old VZ 24. I had to install a new old stock replacement handguard.

Wow, nice looking RC Czech crest example. Did you refinish the stock? Those I have seen in person (on the racks at stores) looked a lot less well finished but they might also just have been really dirty and greasy.

No, I didn't refinish the stock. I didn't buy it directly from a dealer (private sale) but I'm pretty sure it hasn't been touched. It shows no signs of being stripped/sanded/refinished. Maybe there were varying levels of quality in the refurb process? Maybe some were stored differently? I know with the RC K98k's a person can see vastly different finish levels.
 
Ahh nuts, the time I don't have any pictures of my VZ24 at the moment. She is 1929 dated and is a real beauty.

I'll have to snap some when I go back home soon.

google vz24 sniper, and 2 types will come up. "willyP" has 2 gallerys

There are 2 types of VZ24 snipers, this type and kind of a short semi turret mount.

The semi turret is illustrated in Ball's book.

This one is Czech contract, the Romanian contract is similar/identical. They all seem to be dated from @1935-1939.

This mount is like a giant redfield style base.

The semi turret is apparently the earlier version.


I suppose it should be in your fantasy's... ;-)

Is yours a refurb, surplus, capture or what? Most VZ24's, it would seem, served on the Eastern Front and were not captured by western allies in large numbers.

Believe it or not, some things I don't know a lot about - lol. Axis sniper rifles being one of those subjects.
 
I just paid for a VZ 24 from Trade Ex! Now I play the waiting game! I know nothing about these rifles. Will post pics when it arrives. :)

Century brought in @100 of them into the 'States in the 90s.

Most of them were mismatched and incomplete.

Only 3 were imported complete with original scopes.

Only 1 was reported as complete and matching.

I paid considerably above the going rate for this one because it is matching.
 
My original, non-refurb Romanian VZ-24 with very rare unground King Carol crest from the Wolverine surplus sale. Not in awesome shape, but everything matches but the bolt. How many non-refurb WW2 Romanian Mausers do you see?

Great looking Romanian. If it were mine though, I'd be tempted to look for a VZ24 straight-handle bolt to put in it, it appears to have a K98k bolt in it now.
