The "black gun" dilema

So, if I get the lower, I can simple "build" my AR? Is that what you are referring to?

You can build it when you're ready, or not, as you wish. But, stripped lower or complete rifle, no difference legally, you'll own an AR15, and all Canadian sport shooters should own an AR15 ;).

You may also want to revisit the Mini-14 as well. I've got one of the new 2006 production ones and I have to say I can't see a difference between that and my issued C-8 with was also made in 2006. Both are just barely broken in as well I should mention.

The mini-14 is fairly cheap to buy and doggedly reliable as well, accuracy issues have been addressed for sometime now.
Just thought food for thought.

The ultimate compromise between AR15 and non-restirced fun gun is probably going to be the XCR. The only problem is that there aren't any in Canada yet. Although, wait a year and there could be plenty of them to be had.

Buy the AR-15 in the ultra cool set up of your choice and then go after a less restricted model!
Ps I want one of those lowers too!

I think you should concentrate on getting the restricted permit if you are a member of a club. If you're not and you do more shooting in the woods then get a non restricted. Here is mine :p -

The choices of Non Restricted 5.56mm are
Ar180b = OK least expensive and quite reliable
Swiss arms = Very nice but $$$$$ hhmmmm
SL8 = IMO OK but over rated
Ruger Mini 14 = accuracy issues with some but Ok for the buck.
May be more ???

Then you can get other black non restricted -
Storm - 9mm / .40
CZ858 - 7.62mm X39
Pimped SKS - 7.62mm X 39
May be more ???

There are scores of AR variants (restricted) even in 7.62 Nato to choose from. They vary in length, flat upper, carry handle, folding front site, stocks, etc. They are all nice to have.

Take care

OK, next stupid question.... If I do go with a restricted, do I need an ATT like a handgun to transport the thing to and from the range? If so, that may be a limiting factor, as my club has a limit to the number they issue, and they are full right now.

If not, what paper work is required to transport the rifle to and from the house?

PS: nice 180 there LawrenceD!

It is a 180.. right???

Get the AR, that will be incentive to get you on board and help get it unrestricted. Also, your club limits the number of ATTs? WTH?

I had the same dilemma about a year ago as you speak of here. Now I have an AR with like $1500 worth of goodies on it.

No more dilemma.

But then again I live in D-Town Toronto so I aint going to be shooting in the woods.

I agree with all of the guys here who say buy an AR while you can or at least just a lower receiver (stripped).

If you decide to buy just a lower receiver I would personally suggest the HK SL8. I love that gun, it looks like the battle rifle from HALO and it is an HK (which is sweet). If I had 1800 bucks to burn and a spot to shoot it thats what I would buy.

If you dont buy an AR and find out in a year or six months that you CANT you will never forgive yourself.

It is like getting a crack at tagging Paris Hilton once a year or being able to #### some kinda ###y chick on your street every time you want.

At least thats what I tell myself anyways......gotta justify the $3000 range toy....

I think you should read my sig line. "Freedom dies....."

Yeah, that's my understanding of the thing. I just recently joined the club, and was told they limit it to 40 ATT's a year. Now, that was specifically mentioned to me as "handgun att's" so, I don't know if they have separate ones for rifles, I'll be checking that this week.

The AR is looking favorable, as long as I don't get lost in the paperwork.

Call your range and make sure they allow you to shoot restricted rifles. There are some places in Ontario where old weiners ##### about 'rambo types'. if they dont I suggest finding a new range where the guys arent liberal spies.

I encountered those exact words.

Also dont fear the paperwork. It really isnt that bad and once it is done it is DONE and you are armed to the teeth;)

And thats a great feeling!

Well, I had already asked if restricted rifles were ok, and was told yes, no problem. So, it simply becomes a matter of the ATT. That part I am unclear on at this club.

If the ATT is a problem, there's not much I can do I guess. With the exception of going non restricted for now, and picking up a restricted model later.

I do appreciate all the replies, this has been rather informative.

And, now I WANT the 15.....

That lower thing is a very good idea, I might just do that as I cannot afford a complete AR right now, and I would hate "missing my chance" as to ever owning one... but I was wondering if one would still needs a ATT and be member of a club to get a lower only?

you dont need to be a member, you just need to have plans to be a member. Call shooting edge or one of the dealers on CGN and they will hook you up man
