The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I think this rifle will shoot better than most of us. I personally think the main reason most people have poor results with accuracy when THEY shoot is their choice of optics.

Put a $1000 scope on it an the game changes. These rifles shoot EXACTLY where its aimed - and use hand loads or match grade ammo...

Learning a rifle is the fun part.

I'm going to pick up a pair of GSR's in .223 and .308... don't want any goofy flash hiders though... my LGS has the .308 sans flash hider, but every picture I have seen of a Gunsite .223 has the flash hider... are they made without? Are they externally threaded... if so, is there a thread cap for them?
The new synthetic stock ones come with a muzzle break and thread cap. The issues I had with the existing ones with the laminate stock are that they are a little on the heavy side by the time you mount an optic on them. Also the limitations on mounting a conventional scope, since then you no longer have a backup iron sight available. I also had Ruger Frontier prior to owning a Ruger Scout and found a scout scope is not the best option when hunting.

I handled one of the new lightweight ones at SHOT show... the weight reduction is awesome. In my opinion weight is the GSRs biggest shortcoming and what disqualifies it as a true scout rifle. I've already pestered a distributor about bringing in the model 16" lightweight model. I want it!

I currently own a GPS (Gunsite Poodle Shooter) in .223 and owned Ruger scout in .308 in which I have fired both Military 7.62x51 mm NATO and .308 win. with no issues what so ever. I did a glass bedding job on both my 7.62 and my .223 with fantastic results. The only thing I find is the lead or freebore in the .223 version is way too long to allow for bullet seating just off the lands. Even so, I was able to achieve extremely good groups with both rifles after the bedding jobs. My 7.62 normally shot a bit over 4 " from the prone at 200 meters and was able to achieve a 2" group of 5 rounds at that 200 meter range after the bedding job. The .223 shot not as good after bedding, but I'm still working on that load for this puppy killer.

I totally agree, this rifle is a great shooter with the proper preparation. I can get the accuracy out of mine that you would normally see in a savage or remington.

Thought I'd throw this one up there - I picked up a pair of GSR's for my wife and I. Mine wears the McMillan Hunter 2 stock below, hers is still in the laminate, waiting on the Ruger Synthetic to become available. Optics in pic are a Leupold 2-7X33mm VX-R with the Multi-dot LRV reticle and a Trijicon RM06 on a GG&G mount for close/quick shots. I'm not 100% on this mount yet, feels a bit high. Looking at other options - Trijicon RM55 looks good if I can locate one in country. Weaver also makes one mid way between the two. Also thinking on the XS full length rail as I'd like the RMR mounted under the scope tube and at or below the rail plane.

I like the scout rifle idea. Lightweight, reliable (bolt action), and handy (18 inch barrel) rifle in hard hitting caliber. You can also shoot pretty fast with a bolt action if you practice. Also a big plus for target shooting: accuracy. And the bolt action is realy easy to clean: just remove the bolt. I think it make sense and is a practical idea.

Hope they will give us a left hand synthetic version for weight reduction

How do you like that scope? I was looking online at what I think is the same one, 10x fixed, mil dot, Bushnell Elite Tactical. Very reasonably priced, but I just wonder about the fixed power.... other than a couple of 4x and a Weaver K-8, I've always had variables.
I am very interested in this scope however.

Nice Setup!

I have the same scope for my Ruger - just getting around to mounting it. What Bipod is that? and where did you get the xs rail and scope mounts?

Cheers

The XS rail and the scope mount came from out of the states. I think it was brownells and optics plannet. The bi-pod is a harris 6-9". And the fixed 10x is not bad, Gotta learn to shoot with both eyes open for close range stuff.

No ruger gunsite scout rifles for canadian rangers

NO RUGER GUNSITE SCOUT RIFLES FOR CANADIAN RANGERS.
Back in 2010 DND set out criteria for replacing the Rangers Lee Enfields. Supposedly, these specs came from Rangers themselves. Specs were, bolt action, laminated stock, 20 in. barrel with open sights and flash hider, 10 rnd. mag., and .308 cal. Sure sounds like
a Scout to me. I had heard that RUGER was interested in this contract and pursued a tender. Since a replacement was to be coming in 2015, I contacted Ruger for any information they could give regarding their tender. I received the following e-mail from Bob Gates at Ruger.
The tender involved Ruger giving their technical data package to Colt Canada- so Colt could build the rifle-
and that won´t happen. Sorry, we would love to compete for the Ranger rifle business but it is impossible for
us to do so under the rules set out by your government.
Colt USA cannot build a decent bolt gun and contracts to Cooper to build them. What makes Colt Canada
think they can do any better.
The bureaucrats at DND should stick to trying to determine if their holes are punched or bored and leave
the bolt gun business to those that build bolt guns.#######

It's all about politics, brother. As I recall the replacement for the M14 was awarded to Colt's AR platform when the Ruger Mini-14 was a far better option. The problems with FTF and FTE in early AR's cost lives in 'Nam.

Bull$h!t. Ruger mini 14 wasn't even around when the M16 was being developed and/or adopted.

Does the high comb still allow you to use iron sights?

In that configuration the rear sight was replaced by the rear ring, so no. Currently I'm trying the XS rail which has an incorporated rear sight. In that case yes the comb does allow alignment with the irons and my mis-shapen coconut. YMMV.
