The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I am interested in some polymer magazines for the 5.56 GSR.

I see that MDT mags will work (with some filing?) and I can find sources for them.

What about a lower capacity polymer mag for a more flush fit? Or a source for the factory polymer 10 rounder? I see them in the states but not available for shipping to Canada.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I see Great North Precision has the Ruger AI Style 10 rounders (for pre-order). Anywhere else?

Brownelles in the states ships them

Wanstall's carries the 5- and 10-round Ruger polymer magazines. They're showing as out of stock right now, but I'm hoping they'll be able to get a shipment soonish.

I think the polymer mags are better than the steel, mostly due to compactness, weight, and ease of loading. The steel mag doesn't allow you to load the mag while it's in the rifle. The polymer mag loads with a simple push down. That's a big plus in my book.

Thank you for the replies.

Brownells shows the 10 round mags but not available outside the U.S. I’ve bought from them in the past but not with that restriction.

I see the polymer 308 mags at Wanstalls, but not the 5.56.

I think the MDT are a good bet for the 10 round magazines, especially if they work as is.

The only 5 round mags I have come across are steel Accurate Mags.

For my 5.56 I have the MDT 10rnd polymer, took a little file work and it fit good. I also have the Ruger AI 10rnd polymer, fit with zero mods. Both magazines work well, but if I was to get more I would just get the Ruger AI. I wish they made a flush fitting poymer 4 round mag I would scoop up a couple

Took a while to catch up, great thread, I just joined the club.

I assume the XSrail still isn’t carried by any Canadian dealers?
Found one at Epps I think it was for $175?
Brownells shows $93us probably still the best bet?

I got a couple of XS rails for my GSRs in a parts lot that I ordered from irunguns.

So looks like I can load close to the lands and still feed from mag...love how this rifle carries.
XS Rail in the mail...just need a 3 round mag..
Going to load up some Varget over 165s and play with the irons :)

I have been thinking over how I want to setup this rifle, and this is my longterm plan:

Ruger xs scout rail

Rhodesian sling

2-10 or 3-16 power long range oriented optic (kuz I like to stretch my legs at the range, but want low enough mag for hunting)

Possibly change the muzzle device with the compensator found on the synthetic scout

Possibly change the stock to synthetic for weight reduction

I put a couple hundred rounds through mine last weekend and I had a blast! She ate Norc and hirt surplus with 0 issues. I got about 1.5MOA with the Norc and 2.5 with the hirtenberger. I have some components to handload some 150gr test rounds but havent had the time lately.

If you find a place to buy a synthetic stock please post it here. I've been looking for one for a while.

Only options as far as I know for Ruger rifles are Wildcat stocks out of Alberta or McMillan out of the states via Nechako Outdoor or another dealer that works with them. Either way your probably $700 to $1000 all said and done. The only other option I guess would be to find a take-off factory synthetic in the equipment exchange here.

Just playing Devil's advocate here but if you are using a higher power scope for long range and not a scout scope why bother with the XS rail? Ocular bell clearance or just the ability to have the peep mounted 100% of the time, scope on, or off. That's the only thing that bothers me about the factory peep. If I had to carry it I know I would lose it. It would be nice to have on board stowage somewhere so it would always be there.

The xs rail has a peep built in, so no need to carry anything else with you.... it would also allow for a QD setup with a peep as a back up....
