The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

I bought 3-round and 10-round poly mags from IRUNGUNS early in the year. The 3-round is just fine, but TAKE NOTE: the two 10-rounders from IRUNGUNS were pinned to 5-rounds. They are Ruger mags, designed and built for a bolt action rifle the importer decided to pin them.

Which reminds me, I never heard back when I asked IRG what was up. I will get back on that...

Where did you get your 3 round mag? I'm about to purchase a 3 and 5 round poly mag for mine from Brownells as they are the cheapest I've seen so far, and they have them in stock, just wondering if there is a domestic source that has them at a reasonable price?

I just saw that as well, interesting I guess, though a .223 chambering really seems to detract from the "do everything" ideal that the scout rifle premise is based upon. For me the .223 doesn't seem like a very good do everything kind of cartridge, but that is just my opinion and I'm sure many will want one in .223, power to them, it is their money and they can spend it however they see fit.

All I know is that I can't wait to get mine out looking for moose and elk, just need to get some rounds loaded up and somehow get away from this time consuming hindrance that some people like to call....work.

Edit: I meant the above in response to the post two spots above, it seems someone squeezed one in while I was typing. : )

Thanks for the reply and the heads up. Hopefully won't be an issue wherever I buy from as I'm only looking for a 3 and 5 round mag. Sorry to hear that happened to you though, I hope you can get them exchanged for proper 10 round mags at no cost.

The polymer mags feed awesome.... ran through several of my a zooms without issue.... love single stack

Yeah I can't wait to get some, I think I'm really going to like the profile of the rifle a lot better with the nearly flush fitting 3 rounder. I also totally agree and wish that they'd rechambered the scout in a larger caliber cartridge rather than smaller. Oh well, just another excuse for me to buy either the Ruger Guide or Savage Alaskan in .375R. : )

The trouble with the polymer magazines is that they are shorter than the metal front to back; I generally reload to within a few thousandths from the lands. Both types of magazines prevent you from coming close - they're really designed for off the shelf .308. (and, I presume, 7.62 x 51)

I haven't checked the shipping prices yet from Brownells, but even with the exchange rate they are way cheaper than any retailer I've seen yet in Canada(I've only compared the poly mags though because those are what I'm interested in buying).

I haven't bought them from Frontier Firearms or anything so I can't speak to the customer experience, but I do see them (them being the 10-round polymer mags) listed there for CAD $48.

I do try to support Canadian dealers but Brownelles list them for 15-20$ less. Thats a huge savings if i order 3-5. plus they have 10rd 5rd and 3rd in stock. And if i order a few other items then the price of shipping is offset. Just worried that they say 10rd on the invoice and it comes to a halt at the border.

One more for you guys.

Can you swap regular ruger bottom metal onto the scout and due away with the magazines?

I know I know. WHY??

Its simple Im not expecting combat or scouting missions in my future and i just want a nice compact hunting rifle with no mag to loose

Thanks

If the answer is yes and someone wants a conversion keep a eye on the EE

This is why I've got a stainless Ruger compact 308 but I have been temped to get the Scout, if the bottom metal fits that would be good to know.

Haven't had time to get out shooting her.... but did manage to get the XS rail installed and mount the Vortex Viper PST I picked up for it..... Loving the TMCQ reticle....

Very nice. Im not a fan of the flash hider but still love that walnut.
I cut my XS rail short so i can mount a scope with a optical bell in the traditional spot and keep the iron sights. I figured there was no point in the extra 6 inches of scout rail if i was never mounting a scout scope

I actually used the rail to mount the scope where the rifle would have perfect balance... as you can see, my scope is quite a bit forward compared to where the Ruger rings provided would have put the scope.... I am 50-50 on the hider, but this has th eUS 16.5 inch barrel, so we will see how it flares and whether the hider is needed.... it is just threaded in so I can take it off if required....

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you use the ruger rings provided if you mounted it in the traditional position?

I cant keep irons as a option and use a scope with the ruger rings so i have a 3x9-40 mounted in leupold QRW rings so i get best of both worlds

Don't know why they couldn't fit a double stack mag. That 10 round single stack thing is a joke. Someone has stepped up to provide a double stack that gets the 10 round mag down to a sensible length: ht tp://gunsumerreports.com/review_alpha_industries_type-2_10-shot_magazine_p1.php

Still a lot longer than it needs to be, but that's the single feed problem of the action I guess.
