the closest shot

It was very foggy and I never made the shot.

I know that this thread is about the closest shot, but in my case, I never made the shot.

Two seasons ago I was bow hunting in a tree line just off an open field. I had never seen fog so thick in my life and there was zero wind. Figuring I was wasting my time bow hunting in these conditions, I quivered my arrows and then strapped my bow to my packsack. I came down out of my tree and started across the field towards the trail that lead to the road where my car was parked.

I could barely see one meter in front of me as I crossed the field towards the opposite tree line, when all at once, right there in front of me were two does within arms reach. I literally came face to face with these two deer. I was so close to them that I could hear them breathing. I think they were as surprised as I was because we just stood there staring at each other for about five seconds. They never ran, jumped or spooked, they simply turned around and walked slowly into the fog and within seconds, they were gone.

Definitely, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Regards
Robert

Wild boar running hard at 10 feet, after she clipped my pant leg charging at me. I had winged a small pig, and this big sow came out of some thickets; hell bent for revenge. That was exciting to say the least. It makes you focus real fast!!!

I had a doe jump over me while bowhunting

I was hunting a creek bank next to a causeway when a doe came along and instead of taking the path i thought that she would she dissapeared from view behind the overgrown fence I was hiding behind. I heard hoofs on the other side of the fence and then the doe sailed over top of me. I was too shocked to get a shot off. Still one of my best bowhunting experiences ever.

two feet with the 45-70 for me.
We were going on watch, it was just legal light. The guy going into the next watch put up two deer. I watched the doe running up to me. I knew I could take her easily, but there was a buck behind her, and he just would not come over the top of the ridge, and I wanted both. He finally disappeared, so I took the doe at two feet. She would have hit me on the next bound.
I've taken a number of animals, deer, moose, and black bear, within ten feet. It's something that just happens in heavy cover.
One of our guys was run over by a deer he didn't see. Knocked him out cold on a rock. The same guy had a deer jump over his head, off a rock ledge a few years earlier. Didn't get that one either.

One of our hunters also got run down by a deer. He was watching up a trail (windy day) as the dogs had put one deer across there moments earlier. While watching there another burst out of balsams, and ran him down, tearing his coat off. It didn't knock him out, but he was left visibly frazzled.

A large whitetail doe at 5-6 yds with a 12 ga/.38-55 "cape gun" - the 12 ga. barrel with OOO Buck. It had been raining all day, I was soaked to the skin and cold and I was giving up early, just before dark. I was walking Back to the truck through the cedars with the gun over my right shoulder and my "bucket stand" in my left hand when 2 does jumped across the trail. I dropped the bucket, swung up the gun and actually shot her out of the air like a grouse! 1 pellet in the neck - dropped dead on the spot.

Shot a coyote at 10 feet with the .308.

Oh, and one time I hit a deer on the head with a hammer. That did the trick. I guess that would put me at about 1 foot?

Shot a 8 point @ 5 yards on a dead run with the Ruger Deerfield.44 mag. He just about ran me over. You should of seen his eyes when i pulled the gun up. Looked something like this

this season a doe came out at 10 yards and i was sitting beside a tree... I missed with the crossbow. just went over her back bahahaha

Shot a young buck at 6 feet with my 50 cal muzzy. He was trying to cross the fence through the opening. But I was in the opening. Rolled him right over backwards. lol, tasted great too. First time I ever had a fall venison roll.

Calf moose, first shot was from 250-300 yards. Ended up getting it in the leg. While looking for it, was walking along when it jumped up 10 feet away. One shot betwixt the eyes was the closest shot I've ever had, biggest adrenaline rush too...

We were just starting to push a small chunk of cedars when someone yelled that one was coming my way. I thought that I wouldn't see it because I was surrounded by cedars. I heard crashing coming straight at me got my gun to my shoulder and a doe stopped at about ten feet, I kind of looked down the side of the barrel and then through the scope pulled the trigger filled my freezer. Shot a coyote onthe other side of a fence as he was about to jump over maybe five yards. My closest P!$$ off was using my hawken muzzle loader had a nice ten point come out of these pines to the edge of the field at 15 yards put the sites on him pulled the trigger and just the cap went off. the buck stood there and I was able to get another cap on pulled the trigger again and only the cap went off. The buck then ran by me so close I should have just pulled my knife and stabbed him as he went by but he stopped at ten yards and allowed me to put a third cap on and still just the cap went off.

I've taken 3 deer with a 50cal that have left powder burns on the deer. A big old spike charged me once in the rut(I had just gutted a stinkest doe I've ever smelled) I stopped him at about a foot in front of the muzzle. Only time I've ever dropped my gun and ran like a little ##### outta the thick stuff. Last fall I hit a fawn with a 50cal inline as a reflex she rolled past me as I jumped out of the way she stood up gave me the wierdest facial expression and ran back on her tracks over a 100yards. I threw the new gun in the leaves and started swearing then I saw lung material in the tree branches. In her chest out her ass 338grain powerbelt. That makes a mess. I've taken 2 deer with a bow that were between the tree and the ladder of my stand. Would have had another but I looked straight down and the worst thing happened (I told the hunting party I didn't see anything) the cold morning loosened my nock as I took aim the arrow fell out leaving just the knock and a broken ego. Hit the deer but gravity was weak. The real quest of stupidity was leaving the bow behind to tend to a dead deer that almost kicked my ass. He stood up after laying dead for 1/2 hour snorted and tried to horn me and stupid me grabbed the horn. No one in my group questions my 7" double edged blade now as I knived the 4point he shuk me good 2 years later and I still haven troubles with my shoulder. But his horns make a nice knife holder during the off season

Got out of my tent, crack of dawn a couple of seasons ago to take a leak. Not more than 10 yards from me was a young buck grazing on clump of clover. He clearly saw me and just couldn't be bothered with my presence. He was kind enough to wait while I retreived and loaded my 30/30, cleared the morning grog from my eyes and kindly dropped right where he stood. It's nice to have a gift every so often. :)

Having a piss. Weiner in one hand, shotgun in the other. Partridge flew and landed on the tree right beside me. Weiner still out.. I raised the shotgun up and the end of the barrel was about a foot away from its head. Instant decapitation. I ended up throwing it out as its breast meat was full of long skinny white worms. Arggghhhh....
