I'm not a .30-06 fan; if one of them is gonna be cool, it has to be so because the rifle itself is cool regardless of the boring cartridge. I once though that the coolest '06 was a nice Merkel SxS double rifle I had; it had user-adjustable barrels that could be regulated to hit the same point of aim with the load of one's choice. Each barrel on its own was extremely accurate; once it was regulated it could shoot composite groups at 300 yards using both barrels that rivalled many single-barrel bolt guns. I sold it only because...it was a .30-06!
But that was years ago. I now know that the coolest...or retro-coolest... .30-06 is this one:

I posted this pic somewhere else, but it's appropriate in this thread as well. It's a Steyr Mannlicher Professional Model M. It's been a long-time Grail Gun for me, even if it's an '06. One of the original synthetic-stocked rifles, rear-locking bolt, double-set triggers, super ###y external hammer-forging spiral on the barrel, crazy complex Euro QD rings. I thought it was
la creme de la creme when it was introduced in the last millennium; it's certainly been superseded by today's ordnance and has more than its share of quirks and warts and foibles. To be clear, I don't think it's beautiful...looks kinda awkward, if truth be told...but it is still, IMHO, the coolest '06 ever, retro or otherwise.
Yeah, I admit, I'm shallow; there are some manufacturer's names that, when stamped on one of their products, just get me excited to own and use the thing. Harley...Nightforce...Olympus...Blaser...Brno...Steyr...no rhyme nor reason to it, but it's true.
I'm currently carrying my new-to-me Austrian toy each day in hopes of sniping a deer; if a buck falls to it, I hope he appreciates the honour I am bestowing upon him.
