We love our Venison but have you ever wondered how much it actually costs us :?:
I think we can do a breakdown on the average hunter and what it costs him to bring home the venison. :?
Hunting licenses........................................................................$200.00
Rifle with Scope.......................................................................$1200.00
Ammo for practice....................................................................$200.00
Ammo for the hunt.....................................................................$19.00
Camo Clothing, boots and stuff...................................................$500.00
ATV........................................................................................$6000.00
4X4 Pickup...........................................................................$40,000.00
Two weeks off work.................................................................$1800.00
Supplies, Food ..........................................................................$400.00
Beverages................................................................................$250.00
Ball cap with plastic dug turd on the brim........................................$8.00
Gasoline...................................................................................$600.00
Range finder, GPS, Binoculars, other neccesary Gadgets.............$2500.00
Pre-hunt "bribe to go" dinner and a movie for the Wife or G/F........$150.00
Post-hunt "bribe for ###" flowers and gift for the Wife or G/F.........$300.00
New alternator and/or battery for the 4X4 on the way north..........$200.00
New U-joint and/or drive shaft on the way south...........................$400.00
Butcher fees.............................................................................$150.00
Beverages consumed while telling lies at the butchers....................$45.00
Taxi ride home from the butchers.................................................$22.00
Taxi ride back to the butchers the next day to get meat and truck...$22.00

Grand total...........................................................................$55,166.00

Average this total over three years due to lifespan of some items like the truck, atv and other equipment..............................................$16,549.00

Average pounds of venison you would bring home from the butchers per year 50lbs.... times three, give or take........................................150lbs
Now divide that into our three year hunting cost of $16,549.00 and that gives you $110.32 per pound. 8)

I don't know about you but I figure at 110 bucks a pound this is some really top drawer eating we are providing for our families
Our wives and children should drop to their knees and thank us mighty hunters for bringing home the venison.

Yes Riley, but YOU got NO ### after the hunt! That's what you get for skimpin' on da ole Lady!

For just one deer? Hunting licenses cost me less than half what you showed. My Lee Enfield was $200, the used Weaver scope $60, mounts (Cad-Tech) and rings about $100. Reloading cuts my ammo cost by a lot, in the long run, and my boots and clothing that are specifically for hunting have probably cost about $100. My 25 year old $1500 two wheel drive truck gets me where I need to go. What do you need an ATV for, didn't you just say you bought boots? Time off work? Quit your job to go hunting. Gas is expensive everywhere, but if you've been following, you should have saved enough by now to afford it. And if you adopt the right behaviour at home, the wife/girlfriend won't need a bribe, she'll be glad to have some time off herself. My binoculars were $5 off e-bay (o.k. $12 with shipping) and if you learn to judge distance and read maps you won't need a rangefinder or GPS to tell you how far you have wandered from your truck. Which you should be more careful about spending $40k on if the alternator and battery are going already, and more careful about driving so you don't need new drive shafts and u-joints already. If you butcher the meat yourself you won't need a taxi, because you'll be drinking at home, and if you hadn't gone hunting you'd have been drinking anyway, so that doesn't go on the hunting budget.

There, I've saved you at least $50k. But if you can tell me where I can get a ball cap with a plastic turd on the brim for as cheap as $8.00, we'll call it even. :)

I spent 19 days huntign sheep this year,a nd when I finally had a shot (and it was a tough, far shot) I missed.
I shot over.

I'd say about $600 in gas

About another $300 in food/beer

$500 for a lost digital camera.

$100 for folding stairs on my camper that I drove off and lost when I saw a stalk and drove away without checking..

$3 in ammo ( I took 2 shots with a TSX bullet)

No sheep...

That's $1503 with no meat!

But can you imagine the cost of NOT going hunting. Priceless!!!!

All those things can be sold to recoup some of your money, hunting is a state of mind, If I don't go hunting I go out of my mind.

Yeah Tooner... your logic is inescapable... I will find you a hat....

Moose hunt expenses
Food and lodgings
$135 (this year)
Gas, car pooled $10
ATV (Borrowed for fixing it) $0.00
1971 30-30 Winchester $105.00 (new)
Boots from a few years ago, $150.00
El cheapo orange coat $85
Hat no charge, from ministry $0.00

Total for moose hunt, $450.00

If you consider that i already had the rifle, coat and boots, $200.00.
My share of the two moose should work out around $1.50 a pound or less.
Plus I had a hell of a good time with old friends, and that's priceless.

OOPs forgot moose licence $40.00 still a cheap hunt.

cost

Hey BIGREDD your probably close these days but i'm glad i don't keep track but i will say in addition to all that, taking your kids and them scoring on an animal (PRICLEES) Take care guys. John. P.S. The ### is no problem as i'm so wound up by the time my trip cpmes i think my wife is ready to get me out of the house for a week or two.

On my planned hunting trip, Hornhead is comming up from Cowtown, so that is about a 9 hour drive for him.
I have to drive about 2 1/2 hours to get to the same spot.
Gas will be the major expense as it will cost to fill them up than our vehiclesare worth. Probably about $200?

The lodge is $45 a night ( ya, I know, we're getting old and tired!), but you have to stay somewhere, so you can't count that!
My rifle ? Well it's an antique, so it is an investment, can't count that!

My boat gets used for all kinds of other stuff including salvage and rescue on the Athabasca, so it is an investment, can't count that either!

Both of us are on days off so we are not out wages, so that is taken care of.

Binos were given to me by my father, as well as my boots (birthday present) and my other hunting duds are normal everyday clothes
( consumate redneck here...) So they are not an expense.

The flat bottomed boat we will sneak around in on the creeks will be borrowed from my brother's trapline, a boat BTW which was written off as trapline expense. That's covered.

Ammo? one well placed cast bullet propelled by a few cents worth of Pyro and a primer - nothing to really count!

So you see fellas, tabulation of expenses is kinda like accounting with Betty Crocker - If you cook the books right, it doesn't cost very much at all!

Cat

I saved myself $8.50 this year and made the hat myself...

yeah, I did this same math the day I shot my first duck and laughed - even the fanciest restaurants wouldn't have the balls to charge THAT for a duck dinner...
