When was it?

I mean the big imports, with rifles under $200 and the vast amounts of cheap milsurp ammo. Did the ammo arrive around the same time?

Of course it has something to do with the fall of the USSR, but I feel like it's not that long ago. I only got my PAL 1 year ago, so I don't know much from before that.

How common was the SKS before it became today's Lee-Enfield?

I bought a brand new, early Chinese Factory 26 SKS in about 1992 from Century Arms. IIRC, it was $110-ish and you could buy crates of 1500-ish Chinese milsurp ball for about the same amount.

Don't know about before that.

bot an early chinese for $149 in 2005.

there was hardly any russian before 2009 , i paid $400 for a painted refurb a few years ago.

I bought my first SKS in 1995. Was a mismatched Tula 1956, got from Century Montreal for 95$, still have it and its a good shooter. 1 year later, got a chinese military from Century again, 114$ with red fiberglass stock but i replaced with wood, was better.

I bought my chinese sks in 1990 centery arms it was 89 bucks i still have it and i remember getting 2000 rounds of soft point ammo for it and it was 130 dollars lol long time ago.

First quantity imports of Chinese SKS came in the mid 80s. The bulk of Russian came around the same time but were from Egypt/UAR/Syria and came in with the Rashids and Hakims. Small imports of Russian SKS were also brought in via Israel/UK through OG&T in Kenogami.

I bought my first SKS for $300.00 in 1979. It was an M21 T56 out of the US.
The only ammo around was Lapua 7.62x39 which was imported along with the Valmets.

in the 80's, century's catelogue had russian sks' for less than chinese. the chinese where IIRC $199. then in the mid 90's, chinese sks' could be had for $75.

Well, it's longer than I thought. For some reason I had the feeling it was only a couple of years ago. I regularly see old guys at the gun shop wondering what those things with bayonets are.

It seems it's only the russians ones that are recent.

Thanks for the answers.

Well there ya go, you learned something from a bunch of old guy's. Just remember most old guy's "Where in Bagdad when you were still in your dad's Bag".........lol:)

Sardukar, please don't take this the wrong way. Back in the day, the old guys you see now, wondering what those funny looking things with bayonets are, were the same as non interested young people of today. You either like milsurps or you couldn't care less about them. There is another thing to consider, just because a person gets older, doesn't make them any smarter. In some cases they don't get any more experienced either.

Milsurps, have really become a fad again in the last 10-12 years or so. Even then, maybe only 5-10% of shooters have any clues about them, other than they are "ARMY RIFLES". Some people even believe they are more dangerous because they were designed for and use by the military. They find it quite a shock to learn that most of their hunting rifle designs, are based on the milsurp designs. The same goes for a lot of good hunting cartridges.
Don't expect to much from "old guys, unless you've gotten to know them."

Oh no... You just didn't.
There is no way... In any way the LE and the Sks should be mentioned in the same breath.

hmmmm , you lost again ?

sard: yes, today SKS are like the LE of 50s and 60s.

i recall the LE was selling for $25 in every pawn shops, racks of them were displayed in the windows. too bad i was too young and poor to buy any .

Russian SKS were made avialable thanks to the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. That Stuccko Man president they had was told by the UN to destroy certain amount of arms they had in stores. The fool did it so thousends of SKS's came to the market. This process however has been stopped by the current president of Ukraine

I must admit I got some remorse after posting it that way.
My '43 all-matching-still-crusty-with-cosmoline LB No4Mk1 was looking at me funny.

Thanks Curtton, that's how I see the SKS being like the LE, cheap milsurp. And of course the comparison stops right there.

bearhunter: I got my PAL because of my interest in milsurp first, so I may be expecting to much... And thanks for the tip;)
