went up about 20ft in my climber to clear the very thick brush to have a view of the corn field. just as the light was fading a 6 pointer and a doe step out in the field. not enough time to wait for the buck so i had to try for the doe. i leaned over my stand and fired...deer didnt move? so i pump my 870...jammed! first time that a spent shell has ever fell down behind the mag?

so im sitting there digging frantically with my knife to get it freed up and got another in the chamber. just as i lift to aim they take off and i give a mouth bleat and they kept going.

they circled around me and came right towards me and the buck was about 6 yards behind me. absolutely no wind or anything to cover my attempt at turning around for a shot and he was walking away. well you know what he did...

then i realized my frickin head hurt. oops, forgot that i shortened the specops stock on my 870 as short as it will go to fit in the hard case. nasty scope bite, could use a few stitches.

so i unload all my gear at the truck and went back for a look to be 100% sure that i missed and i did. so im in the cut corn field on the way back to where the deer were and i hear something following me just inside the bushline. after a few minutes it stepped out into the field about 40 yards away and sure enough it was that damn buck.

thats twice now that i shot over a damn deer! taking the ground blind tomorrow or friday. if i miss again im going to burn all my gear and take up knitting:redface:

im guessing that buck was just loving the doe estrus buck bomb which is why he stuck around.

Don't feel bad, I missed 3 deer on the second day of our ML season. Sold that ML about 2 hrs ago. I think it was cursed from the factory, and yeah I'm supersticious about things like that.

It may seem like the deer gods hate you, but give it a few years and you'll find you look back on this as a fond memory. Once you've put enough deer on the ground, you'll likely find that it's the ones that got away that you remember most -- in part, I think, because the memories are so much longer and more involved. There's just not much to remember about "There's a deer ... bang!"

We may hunt for deer, but what we're really after is the memory of having lived.

Who puts a scope on a shotgun?????????

Sorry to laugh at your misfortune but I nearly spit coffee on my keyboard reading your story......

We've all had those days where everything that can go wrong goes wrong....The scope bite was the icing on the cake.

Thanks for sharing!

Hope your luck changes!

20ft up and shooting at deer that are pretty close makes it easy to shoot over them. my first time hunting I missed 2 does at 30 yards by shooting over top of them. I couldnt believe it, took 4 shots at 2 does and not one was touched. I almost chucked my gun into the swamp behind me after that episode LOL

The deer god's don't like the tactical word either. :p

its not a "traditional" hunting stock, but it sure takes the ouch factor out of shooting a 3 1/2" turkey load when your shoulder is pinned against a tree;)

lol hope the eye does not close on ya oh yea
:needPics: of scope eye

if you insist :D

it went deep enough that i could see bone. ive been hit in the head pretty damn hard a few times but this one wins hands down. i still have a damn headache:confused::redface:

I think you should sue yourself for personal injury.

And like we said in the "other" thread, maybe sight in from your stand. Twenty feet is pretty high...........

I thought that I only had bad time for 3 days in a row
Thanks for the story, It makes me feel that I had nothing as compared to you
Good Luck this time and keep posting

Too bad about the luck. Took me a few years to finally bag one, but it was worth the wait. I'm sure karma will come around and you'll end up with a trophy! As for the scope bite, well... thats one of those self correcting problems lol

ive shot my 870 with a 3" sabot thru the rifled barrel (about the same as shooting 3 1/2" mag buckshot) from the prone position and that sucked. still didnt get the scope bite BUT the specops stock was adjusted to the proper length.

for this shot i had it shrunk down to the LOP i use to store the gun and when i am wearing heavy clothing. goes down to a 12" LOP? so it was 2" closer than its usually at. plus the specops stock compresses to absorb recoil bringing it another 2" to my face at the shot.

thinking i shoulda went to the doctor though. i still have a headache from last week and my nose still hurts.

I would have just used crazy glue on that little cut! LOL! that said, I always carry the single sticks of crazy glue in my hunting pack, one in my fishing vest and one in the car - it's the same stuff I use in the ER (Just 10x more expensive!) - hate to lose a day out because of a cut!
