The difference a sling makes

I agree with Cat here. If slings didn't work why do all international competitor use them in smallbore and fullbore competition. I have never seen a fullbore shooter shoot without a sling unless it broke or they pulled their handstop out during the string.
I think the only reason slings are not used in the standing position in international 3P and air rifle events is to add a degree or difficulty to the already difficult standing postion. With the rifles, ammo and training these days alot of shooter will shoot clean in prone and kneeling and the point or 2 that are dropped are in the standing position.

I have never competed in the manner most of you speak of, but I can honestly say that the proper use of a sling greatly enhances accuracy in all positions. I use one every chance I can when shooting different positions. I have a TIS M24 on my M-14 and it's an excellent rig when used properly. If you are not seeing an improvement in accuracy using your sling In my OPINION I would say you are not utilizing it properly. I hate to say I agree with Cat and Maynard and it hurts because it ruins a the oportunity to debate with these guys.;) :D

As I've already posted, I'm not saying slings don't work, I'm saying they work for 3 points of hold, which is achievable in prone, sitting, and kneeling, but not achievable when standing. When you are standing there is absolutely no extra force of any kind to counter or reduce wobble. If you use a sling offhand, there are extra forces, but they do not and cannot act in anyway to reduce wobble, because they don't act in any direction that is counter to wobble. If I'm wrong, then so are Tubbs, Cooper, and Issac Newton.

Kind of a contradictory post , isn't it?
First you say" no", then you say "yes".
Anything done inproperly is usually not very productive, we all know this.

Well excuuuuuuuse meeeeeeeeeeee!

Actually, it's not a contradictory post; it states that it's effective while braced, not very effective while offhand. And if you all know that everything done improperly is ineffective, what's the reason for the post in the first place? To figure out the PROPER way maybe?

Like I said, IMHO, doesn't mean it's the gospel truth, just my experience. :D

The way I had it explained to me, the benefit of a sling standing is largely found after the trigger is pulled as well, as it braces the rifle downward more solidly by tensioning against the arm, resulting in less rifle 'squirm' and pulling of shots. Makes sense to me, and I do shoot tighter groups slinged up off hand than without a sling.

I'll agree in so much as standing is the position the effect is least notable, though in my opinion it still is, and note my first post speaks of shooting slinged up from kneeling, yet this is a standing debate. :p
