Hi all.

I'm going to be doing some reloading for my 30-30. I'm a newbie to reloading and have only done loads for my 22-250 so far.

I've got some IMR 3031 already.

I'm wondering what others have used?

I'm shooting a Marlin 336 that I bought brand new two years ago.
I've used 94's in the past ...

Anyways ... I hunt mainly in bush country where the average shot is under 100 yards.

What are some recipes for the good old dirty 30?

Also, I'm intrigued by the Buffalo Bore ammo. Does anyone know what that recipe is? I haven't done a lot of research into it.

Thought I would start here! šŸ˜€

Thanks all.

I'm currently on some holiday time but will get cooking in a month or so.

I've also got to purchase dies etc as well. I've got the classic Lee beginners setup.

Thanks!

3031 is the classic powder for the .30/30. I've used RL 15 in the past, but it's so hard to come by my entire stock is now reserved exclusively for my 9.3x62. I've also used H335. IMR 4064 should work as well, it's close in burn rate to RL15. I haven't run the H335 over a chronograph yet, so I'm not sure how well it performs. With RL 15 I was getting 2250 with a 170 gr. bullet out of Winchester 94.

Stick whit the imr3031 and 170 interlock about 28 to 30
(30 is over max charge i never have issue whit this charge)
28.5 seem to be the winner in several rifle try it !!

Hi all

Thanks for weighing in. I'll keep my eyes open for some of those powder options. Good to know that I've got a good powder to use (IMR 3031).
I'm also not desiring extreme velocities either.

Good to know I'm on the right track.

Hey there Mauser ...
Looks like we're in a similar area. Where do you go for most of your supplies? Epps? Accuracyplus? Williams? Online?
Just curious ...
Thanks

I've been getting most of my stuff online; here on the EE, brass & bullets from tradex or Hirsch, Powder from Budget Shooter Supply. Shipping was quite reasonable with Canpar. All three of those gunshops are an hour and a bit away, and they never seem to have what I want when I go there.

LVR is a great powder for 30-30 as is 3031. Can't remember my data but a stiff charge of lvr gave me good results with jackets and 3031 with cast

i've done a lot of loading for the 30-30. I've found it's not particular about powders, and I've used a good number with great results.
H4895, 4895, R15, R7, H4198, Varget, 3031. R15 was very accurate in my model94 Winchester, also gave the best speed over the chronograph, but the numbers escape me at the moment.
I have loaded to high levels in the past, but found it didn't make enough difference to make it worthwhile. I usually load for about 2100fps at most.
The best bullet for me has been the 170gr Hornady interlock, it's both accurate, and effective. I took a bull moose with it a number of years back. That was with an H4895 load at 1950fps.

Back when IMR 3031 was the popular powder for the 30-30 with 170 grain bullets, there was a little rhyme we used---30 grains of 3031 in 30-30 with 170 grain bullets.
They have gradually cut back on the load until now most loading manuals will show only about 26 to 27 grains of 3031, everything else the same.
Strangely, the 30-30 with 170 grain bullets was designed for a velocity of 2220 feet per second and that is about exactly what 30 grains of 3031 drove the 170 grain bullet.
So if you use the modern load of about 26, maybe 26.5 grains of 3031, don't think you still have a 30-30. Your velocity will be more on the order of 1800 feet per second. Like 400 fps less than a 30-30 should be.
