Slight impacts can close the bolt. Seems really sketchy to me....

I unfortunately never saw this mentioned in any thread before I modded part #b41. I probably will replace them and go back to stock. Just seems dangerous. Also I barely radiused the cutout, so I don't think you could dremel out less material and have it less sensitive. I might try squaring off the end of the piece to see if it holds up better.

Look at the design of the after market units .. not DIY , but the ones done by the pros .. very different look from the simple dremel fix ... have a peek at the ones at Hical who are represented here on this site , if you are going to spend a few $ on a new OEM , you may wish to consider one that has been designed to avoid this very situation ... click on the dealer network tab at the top of this page ...
 
The one that came with my Nomad kit looked VERY similar to the stock one I had modded... the finish on the actual opening was cleaner but the shape was nearly identical.
 
My aftermarket piece works perfect, in the older rifle I could drop it from 3 feet off the floor and it held, I could beat on it in any direction other than rearward and it would hold, so I decided it was perfectly safe. I now have one in each of my 10-22's.
 
I have the marauder one with a kidd trigger and I still had to mod it slightly to get it to function in the kidd group, but I definitely do not have that issue. I could see this happening if your charging handle spring isnt very stiff, but mine doesnt budge even if I slam the butt on the ground.
 
Here's what mine does, I just slapped the bottom of the stock.


edit: I played around with it a bit -- it seems to close by bumping off and on, almost like the release is right on the 'edge' of holding the bolt some times
I have the old part though -- so if its possible this is going to cause problems with the gun down the road - I can switch back

double edit: a bit more research shows this is a 'known problem' with some nomad/marauder kits (I guess some others too) - I was more worried about the possible mag issues I must have skipped over reviews talking about the bolt

I bought the Volquartsen unit also .. No problems on a 10/22 TD .. Did the mod yesterday ...


Update .. Yes a slight smack it holds .. Bang the butt, it pops .. But I do not see any problem with that .. If I have a loaded mag in the unit the safety is on prior to any trigger action .. And I load mags with the bolt closed anyway ..

I would need to cycle prior to fire .. Seems like it bit to do about nothing ....

Great thanks for the input. Let's think about this for a second though. Because I'm not the richest guy, $50 for a pair of those, (shipped including tax) isn't a cheap fix without some guarantee it will work.

Once the shape of that opening is modified, the bolt release can no longer stay up/engaged on its own (which is the whole point right?) it snaps back down into place anytime there is no pressure on it from the bolt.

Which means what really is holding the bolt open at that point is friction between bolt and the front angled surface on the release...

...Hmm I'm realizing I probably need pictures to discuss this and understand what is happening.
 
Let me understand this. You mod the rifle so the bolt hold will release when you pull back on the bolt and let it go then you're concerned when you strike the butt (causing the bolt to slide backwards) and it releases???

FYI an AR HOD will release when you strike the butt as well.

ok good, I really wasnt sure if that was normal or not -- didnt have a comparison and makes sense when you put it that way. I'll stop worrying and go shoot it instead :)

Good plan.

An alternative to dicking about with the bolt hold open, is to remove it and chuck it in the drawer of things not really needed but too good to throw away yet. It really is a bigger PITA than a value, from my perspective.

Dozens, if not hundreds of designs out there that are perfectly safe without a hold open. Not really required. If it held open after the last shot, as per the AR, etc., it might be of some use.

I don't see what the worry is. It seems to work fine to me. Were you planning on putting in a loaded mag and thumping it on the butt with the muzzle in an unsafe direction? And even then it would just load a round and you would have a live firearm, scary!!!!

I have one of these and yes it will close if I slam it on something. But I am not worried cuz I ACTS PROVE. Kind of like "it hurts when I do that, so I don't do that'
