Picked up an old Marlin 1893 over the weekend. Not a perfect specimen but very much functional. Needs a little TLC to spruce it up.
Somewhere in the past someone has engraved their SIN# in the side of the receiver. Would like to remedy this.
Would a bit of JB weld act as a filler and some kind of colouring mixed in to help blend it in??
Any other ideas??

How deep is the engraving? If the rest of the piece is worth some investment I’d think about trying to sand it out with 400 grit sandpaper do the complete receiver, other small parts and get Rex (rwnblack) on cgn to CCH it. View attachment 1098791
Not sure what was used to do the engraving, but some of it is pretty deep, a very crude job.
Almost looks like someone used a center punch. A series of spots then the punch held at an angle to connect the spots to form the numbers. Well beyond polishing out.

so far far the fixes would enhance the ugly ness
it's not a collator grade gun so just leave it
unless the complete side is sanded equally it will show
400 grit it for polishing not sanding that will leave a misc higher luster on the metal than the original finish

Tig welder (a good one) could fill the holes then you'd have to file, draw file and repolish and blue or color case the whole receiver.
Back in the 1970's police here in the maritimes went house to house offering to engrave valuables with an electro pencil. Buggered up a lot of nice guns. Still see them now and again. Called it Operation Identification, I think.

Cover it up like that bad tattoo you got with your ex when you were 18?

Someone with a laser engraver might be up for such a challenge. I've seen some pretty cool designs...

Yeah the ridiculous “operation identification” program. Many years ago, over 40 , local community police organizations encouraged folks to engrave their SIN on all household valuables. Which of course made most worthless and unsaleable. Case in point, had an heirloom ,old Belgian made Browning shotgun that my uncle engraved his SIN into …I could have just killed him for doing such a stupid thing …luckily he already deceased …😜😜

Whoever thought adding potential identity theft to simple property theft was really not doing anyone any favors.

Would a side mount for a scope cover it up?

I feel identity theft in the 70s was far more difficult and had far less implications than in 2026 🤪
it was probably easier in the 70s because gov ID didn't have pictures. unfortunately these sin numbers have traveled through time and pose a threat to owners still using the same sin# thanks to a lack of foresight.
Really goes to show the changes to society over the last 50 years, and it aint pretty.

You bought a shooter with a history that unfortunately isn’t cosmetically appealing but interesting. Leave it as is or pass it along to the next person. If you keep it find the person behind the number.

It was encouraged by the Police in the 70's. Not just firearms, Stereo Receivers are another item you will find with SIN numbers engraved on them..... it was an anti theft strategy.
Yeah but it was bad advice from a simpler time, because the thing is that SINs are now effectively useless unless to the police unless items are recovered while there's an active investigation underway and they can ask the victim about them. There is no way a Canadian cop can legally store the number or call someone and ask who a SIN belongs to because they've become an important item covered under federal and provincial Freedom Of Information And Protection Of Personal Information laws that can only legally be used for taxation and pension reasons. If you're really worried, use your driver licence number

Good point!
These guns represent a moment in time.

Maybe they will be collectors items down the road.... :)

I have a bunch of tools from my step father with the dreaded Operation ID engraving.
