heloo and HELP!!

I was cleaning my rifle after a match this morning and these two pices just dislodged and fell out of the receiver of the rifle. they are both wafer thin flat things, the loading platform nothing but a shaped piece of yogurt container damn near, and the ejector is a flat stamped piece of sheet with the ejector thingy just bent up so it bumps the rear of the spent casing as the bolt hauls the case outa there.

i have both on hand, i was able to position them back onto the "bump" that the stamped hole in the ejector fits over and put the bolt back, and the thing seems to cycle fine although i have not fired it. here is a link to a schematic of the thing. the ejector is #15 and the loading platform is #26

http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Manufacturers/Remington-33454/Rifles-37895/540X-39523.htm?page=2

does any one know if these parts are actually glued into the floor of the receiver???? and if so, what type of adhesive would be used? it looks almost as if there is some remnant of a glue on the bottom of the pieces.

it just kinda freaked me out. i see that the loading platform is on back order at Numrich but that the ejector is available. I guess that i will purchase a couple as maybe they were meant to be expendable parts with a planned obsolescence, i do not know.

any help would be appreciated!!

thanks

If you look at the exploded view diagram that you provided a link to, the ejector (15) has TWO holes in it. The back hole is for the loading platform (26) which has a stud on the bottom of it, and the front hole should be for a small screw.

OK, thanks, that all looks reasonable an consistent with the gun i have- so how is it that the bullet platform stays in place? is it a friction fit?
I am thinking that it looks like small screw for the forward hole of the ejector is missing and that because of this there has been some wiggling and wear of the plastic stud of the bullet platform and that indeed some one got tired of the situation and just lok-tited it into poition, and i might do the same again as i have no idea what that little screw is.

this mystery screw is not shown in the schematic. it wouldn't be part of those pins (#2) called the 'barrel assembly pins' are they??? naww, i hope not. I would rather not take the trigger assembly off

any way, thanks for the info to all for how their guns are put together, i hear that there were only ever 6,374 of the 540X produced, but the same action as the 541, 541T 581 and stuff so the 540X is not an orphan..........................

the answer to my quwstion just came in from Numrichs in New York. this is interesting.......

In this model, the Remington Model 540X the loading platform is retained by a screw that is inserted from the underside of the reciever. The ejector is sandwiched between the loading platform and the reciever. What does happen, sometimes, that the screw backs out and falls into the stock or out thru the magazine well. On occasion this is brought on by over torquing of that screw and stripping the threads out of the loading platform. The cure is to replace the screw, but if the platform threads are damaged, then you either have to replace it or go up one size...which entails opening up access holes with a clearence drill for the new screw and then re-drilling and re-tapping the threads in the loading platform. FWIW This model was introduced in 1969 and dropped in 1973 with a production run of approx6,375 rifles, besiddes the "X" version there were two other variations, the Model 540XR and the Model 540RJR. If our host doesn't have the parts,TRY:

www.ahlmans.com

i am so tempted to just gt out the lok tight and clean the thing up and put it back in place. the "bullet platform" is out of stock at Numrichs. First I will try this Ahlmans place and then go from there.
cheers!

did you find the screw?

yup, right where the fellas from Numrichs said it would be.
the bullet platform plays a little bit more of a crucial role than just a sittin place for the round to be picked up by the bolt though.
the screw threads into a distinct stud that is pretty big (1/8") and it fits into a hole in the bottom of the receiver.
Indeed, the ejector is sandwiched between the bullet platform and the receiver, but that bullet platform has got to be in good shape to hold the works together.

in my gun the stud had busted right off flush with he bottom of the platform, so there was no issue with stripped threads. i did my best to glue the stud back, to no avail, there is no room for a nice "bead" of something good like JB weld; as then the platform will not sit flat on the receiver floor.
I got it back together and the gun will fire. there has been a couple of real upsides to this though:
1. i wanted to drill out the hole in the ejector where the stud of the bullet platform pokes through because that stud was a much larger diameter than the hole in the ejector body. so that might means that the parts are not quite right which gives me good reason to order new ones and wait.
2. the metal used for that ejector is not just any stamped plate it is some kind of titanium super steel that my drills can not go through at all, in fact i think that ejector could be used in a military arm ejecting thousands of spent steel cases and never wear out.
3. i got to see what a critical role the ejector plays in guiding the entire bolt assembly for this rifle. in fact, who ever put it back together last time had selected the wrong hole (there are two) and the ejector was sitting much too far back and not hitting, or "smacking", the butt of the spent shells hard enough to really through them. now it does and the bolt slides better too.

so the gun works and i know a lot more about it

why is the barrel pinned in rather than threaded?? so wierd......... maybe it is much less expensive or something. and they used the saved money for the great trigger.

so now to thank Numrichs- I had to join their little forum to be able to communicate with them and i have to say that was a good move.

my next 22 is in the mail - yup could not stand it and bought one of those Danish Schultz and Larsens from Tradex. they look massive. there are just so many nifty 22 rifles out there and so little time.........

good shooting to y'all!

well,
since i know that you all are sitting on the edge of your seats wondering what has happened with this old gun:rolleyes:
i was in touch with the parts guy at Numrichs and the part that i need is not really obtainable.
the more we communicated (parts guy and gunsmith adviser) he started to get this idea that his dad had given him this strange plastic plate with a stamped steel plate that turned up and he never knew what it was for.
he took a look, measured it and sent me the dimensions and it looks like this fella has been packing around in his tool box for 35 years an old bullet platform/ejector kit for the rem 540 single shot!
it is in the mail now, and we are pretty sure it will just snap into place. just an awesome co-incidence!

and a big thank you to blastattack for his help with the placement of the ejector plate.

so hopefully this should be the happy ending to this thread and story................ cheers all and good shooting!
