Goddammitalltohell, this getting old stuff is for the birds!

My eyes are starting to crap out. I can't read up close anymore and more importantly, the iron sights on my beloved AR15 are beginning to blur. The time is drawing near when poor ol' Filthie will require bifocal glasses, metamucil (GAH!) and probably ###### in lethal doses! My days of slinging up and lining up my iron sights are over.

At least buying gun optics doesn't suck! Gentlemen, I need options!

Mine is a chit house plain jane Bushmaster AR with that triangular front sight. Although the carrying handle/rear sights lift off and can make it a 'flat top' those front sights will be smack dab in the way of any scope I put on it!

I don't want a tactical sniper scope, anything that gives me a clear sight picture of the target is fine. Can you AR geeks help an old buzzard out?

I feel for ya old timer...same thing happening here...been selling off my tang peep sights cuzz I can't see the front sight worth a chit anymore...
My Mom used to say "there's nothing wrong with my eyes...my arms are just gettin too short!" ;)

Well, were in the same boat I've been wearing progressive lenses for about 6 years now and I'm 51 years old. The good thing is it's not the end of world. I have a Bushnell Trophy 1X32 T dot on my AR, like Ftaview mentioned and for the price I think it's a great way to replace your iron sights on your AR.

To add to this, I also have a $40 Tasco Red dot which would probably work as well.

How about a Leupold VX 3 1.5-5x20mm from frontier firearms?

they're listed at $550

Or you could look at a Redfield 2-7x33 Revolution Rifle Scope, $200 from frontier.

The buy once, cry once option is the Aimpoint Micro T-1:

You can save a hundred bucks or so with the H-1:

Mounts like the KAC / Larue (if you can find one) / American Defense:

will add a hundred or 2. Figure $1000 or so. Upside is they are almost universally liked, battery life is years and years, durability is excellent and the front sight (if you can believe the vast majority of users) will not distract you much if at all. I tried one and liked it, but don't own it.

My eyes have gone the way of the bi-focals/progressives too (groan)

I use a Millet DMS-1 and it is the bees knees.... (WTF does that mean?)

ok... I really like this scope on my AR.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

I am a gun club duffer, I have no interest whatsoever in 'specializing' my AR to any specific task - I cherish the 'do-it-all' flexibility of the original rifle. I refuse to shoot off benches or bipods and prefer to shoot from the positions whenever possible. If I could hit a man in the chest at 200 yards in the boiler room - that is good enough for me!

I also prefer to stay away from electronic sights - I know they work and work well and they are the future of combat sights - but I am old and foolish and stuck in my ways. My eyes are still good enough that I don't really need artificially illuminated reticles...

I really like what Red has on his poodle shooter - but doesn't the front sight ass'y get in the way?

I have a Leupold VXIII 1~5X on my Marlin Guide gun and it is fine there...but it just doesn't sit right on the AR and I need some funky different mounts for it. I will buy another one if I could get decent mounts for the VX III...

1) with both eyes open at 1x you won't see the front sight - your brain compensates. At 4x, the front sight will blur out and again be invisible. And FYI, the Millet counts as an "electronic sight" due to the illumination.

I wouldn't write off electronics. The current Aimpoint H-1 (no magnification, just like your irons) has a battery life of 50000 hours. You turn it on, leave it on, and replace the battery every leap year. Easy. The Millet will last about 100 hours, so you need to remember to turn it off, although you can shoot it with the illumination off - the reticle will be basic black. http://www.millettsights.com/downloads/Millett_DMS_Manual.pdf

2) best bet in canada, the ADM Recon - either the 1 or the 30 depending on the diameter of your scope - http://www.armseast.com/store/index.php?p=catalog&parent=33&pg=1

I say spend the coin on a Trijicon Accupoint and get the best of both worlds. Tritium illumination for low light work(not that it helps identify the target), adjustable fibre optic illumination to aid in sight acquisition and the ability to black out said fibre optic for a plain jane black reticle. Don't forget the TR21 or TR24 go from 1.25-4x and 1.0-4x magnification respectively. The benefits of a CCO/Reddot as well as the advantage of a little magnification. All this from a company that builds rugged reliable gear.

Hmpffff - the more I read about these electronic scopes, the more interesting they become. I am considering one made by Schmidt and Bender...wish the turkeys at Wolverine had the prices up...

if you think you can swallow the S&B prices then i think you'd also be into another great optic the Nightforce NXS.

But sadly my eyes couldn't tell enough of a difference between a $1200 Leupold VX-7 and my a $300 DMS-1 to warrant treating myself.

I had one of these "moments" recently... My Tavor showed up, I put the rifle to my shoulder & looked through the Mepro21 and the 1MOA dot & "hatches" were fuzzy... I instantly thought that there was a problem with the darn thing...

So, I called CanAm & Chris simply told me it was my eyesight! This was seconded by my lovely wife who kept saying "Why don't you put on your reading glasses?"...

After some debate (denial on my part), I put on my glasses & PRESTO, sharp & clear reticle... Ugh... Now my wife is calling my reading glasses my "shooting glasses"! UGH!!!

What is even funnier is that if I put up the rear BUIS, looking through the peep actually does something for my eyes & the reticle is CLEAR!!! I don't know the physics behind this, but I can continue to avoid using my "shooting glasses" IF I put up the rear BUIS on my Tavor! Ha ha ha, fooled you Father Time! HA HA HA!

Cheers
Jay
