The filthiest .22 ammo: Who makes it?

Its been a little while since I've bought thunderbolts or wildcats, but I would way rather shoot remington thunderbolts than winchester wildcats.

Except for the higher than average FTF on the remingtons and yes they are a little dirty, those wildcats are the nastiest, dirtiest things I've ever shot.

Are the wildcats better now than they used to be? I guess I don't buy either anymore so I don't really know....

SHeeeet, i just bought four bricks of rem cyclone the other day for the pasture rats....lol. i guess i better get a new bore brush cause im still going to shoot em :). Hate Federal, feeding issue with the 10/22 ,duds, 2"groups at 40 yrds at best, despise the wildcats, dirty, duds, misfeeds jams squib loads, and then the 31$ the remmys came on sale for 20 bucks.........;) I figured this time i would try and steer clear of anything that doesnt come individually packed in 50 round boxes inside a larger 500 round box...figured it might be the bulk pack bruising them up etc.... When i win the lottery i am gonna be a bigshot and shoot nothing but CCI stingers.

With my own experiences in mind, I will continue to buy and shoot Remington Thunder/blunderbolts.
They're much cheaper than any bulk .22 and I've found them to be more reliable than most bulk stuff(fed 525, win 555, etc); IMO, 1-2 duds per brick is acceptable for rimfire.
Leading aside, I've never found them much dirtier than any cheap/bulk .22.
Interestingly, I've shot some of my best groups with modified thunderbolts; lubing the bullet really does make a difference in accuracy.
Run a boresnake through your barrel every ~300 rounds to prevent the barrel from leading up.

Don't feel bad.
About three years ago, Lebaron's in Ottawa had Thunderbolts on sale for $14.99a brick.
Not often I get to the city, so I bought "2 cases".
And to make matters worse, I'm not going through nearly as many .22's,
since I started shooting centerfire handguns and reloading for them.
Now I've got enough .22 ammo to last me for the rest of my life...no matter how long I live.

Almost exactly one year ago, this happened to me:

I originally attributed it to a combination of Winchester wildcats and Remington thunderbolts. After more experimentation, I can safely conclude it's the thunderbolts. Interestingly, when I dipped a whole batch of thunderbolt bullets in thinned down alox, the leading goes away, turned out to be very accurate too.

My F*&!

That is APPALLING

I didn't believe it until I looked at the pics. No Thunderbolts for me.

Remington Chunderbolts leaded my S&W K-22 to the point of keyholing in about 75 rounds. Remington "Target" ammo did the same thing.

There used to be pmc zappers, orange and brown box, super waxy bullet, fouled mags and actions.damn, they were accurate and really performed on gophers.wish they still made them.or do they still make them?

I liked all the odd .22lr we used to get out od the ex-Soviet Union.
Things like Junior, Tula and Klimov. Anybody with anything manufacturing or steel related also produced ammo in the USSR.
If you ever wondered what they did with their toxic waste, those .22lrs were their answer.

They were covered in so much waxy-oily filth, that when you pulled one out of the box, it made the same vacuum sucking noise as when you tried pulling your gum boot out of the mud when you were six years old.

Strangely enough, they all went bang and were great standard velocity bullets.
Only you had to wipe your hand on a rag loading a single shot bolt action.

I wish I could find more,,,.

Yup Rem Thunderbolt is filthy. I don't mind Wildcats in .22 Short for some reason. American Eagle is not particularly clean shooting but I find it more accurate and better cycling than the Remingtons so Tbolts get my vote too.
