The FN FiveSeven Problem ???

WoW!...

Did you see the damage done by a 12gauge slug on a vest?! I't might not penetrate but damn, I'd think it would still stop a heart.

Oh and about the FN FiveSeven, yeah... too bad. Looks cool but I think ammo will be a little too pricey for my blood (is the ammo even allowed in Canada?).

The FiveSeven ammo is already prohibited by name.

PART 5
PROHIBITED AMMUNITION

Former Prohibited Weapons Order, No. 10

1. Any cartridge that is capable of being discharged from a commonly available semi-automatic handgun or revolver and that is manufactured or assembled with a projectile that is designed, manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour, including KTW, THV and 5.7 x 28 mm P-90 cartridges.

On the brady website they are blatantly calling it a cop killer bullet/gun.

This gun was not designed with the sole intention of killing cops...and obviously any body with even the slightest sensibilities would know that. All these morons are doing is cashing in on the old cop killer stigma from the 80's where a fabricated news report was used to create hysteria so as to get more TV ratings...

Little did this news station realize what would happen from their ignorance and failed attempt at investigative journalism.

To add...in order for this gun to actually penetrate a kevlar vest it has to be using the armor piercing SS190 bullets (Which by the way, even in the USA happen to be restricted to LEO's only)...I highly doubt that this cartridge would have the ability to penetrate a BP vest with standard copper jacketed lead core loads. More importantly it will definately not be able to do it with any hollow point or soft point ammunition.

The Brady bunch is reaching...and their grasp is outranged by reality. Of course the only people that will fall for this are the very same ignorant people that fell for it before.

Brady Center Quote; "Easily concealable, with extremely dangerous firepower, the FN Herstal Five-seveN is a gun to be taken very seriously by law enforcement. Because of the range and accuracy of this weapon a gunman could easily hold an entire shift of law enforcement officers at bay for hours, making it almost impossible to engage with typical law enforcement service weapons"

Holy crap... This thing is going to dominate Tac-Rifle matches once I duct-tape a stock on it.

In a sad irony, The Brady Center is only serving to PROMOTE the damn thing

Gee, that new 5-7 sounds really badass, I'd better buy it before they ban it. The way they're talking about the thing it's going to make all other handguns obselete. Buy two each boys...

Didn't model 29's become the de rigueur masculine choice after Dirty Harry started blasting .44's all over town? You'd have thought the concussion from a near miss would be fatal...

I have heard the 7.62 TT has similar balistics to 5.7 yet it is one of the cheapest rouds to buy next to .22lr. What is a criminal more likely to buy a brand new $1000+ pistol with expensive hard to find ammo or a $180 relic with cheap and available steel core ammo.

Debatable that all 5-7 ammo is prohib since now they have ammo that isnt designed for the purpose of penetrating body armor. Could also be said the 5-7 isnt commonly available.

What about good old 44 magnum? 50DE? What if its a sawed off 30-06? Alot of #### gets through a vest since the police dont walk around all day with plates. To top it off there head isnt exactly protected at all.

so FN FiveseveN's are prohibited here? That sucks i was thinking about getting one if i could afford it

The ammo might be, the gun most defenetly is not.

So, does anyone import the FiveSeven? Is the 5.7 ammo legal in configs other than the P-90? and is the pistol available in other calibers?

I've only seen the Five Seven around police suppliers, MD Charlton has that and the P90 and FN2000 in their catalogue - don't know how they are for us unwashed civies to deal with - don't really care to find out for myself - cool stuff in the catalogue though, downloadable pdf from their website. www.mdcharlton.ca - fine print in the catalogue says they reserve the right to refuse to sell any product to anyone without giving a reason. If you want one they would be a good place to ask.

Sounds like this ammunition may be very useful to LEO's for stopping the kevlar-clad bad guys...

Of course, they don't mention that.

What about 5.7x28 that is not designed to penetrate body armour (standard FMJ)? The paragraph specificaly states manufactured or altered so as to be capable of penetrating body armour.

Sounds like this ammunition may be very useful to LEO's for stopping the kevlar-clad bad guys...

The fact is that there are really very few kevlar clad bad guys, that tends to come out when there's something that the police want to buy, or us not to be able to buy. I have heard this in the past from street cops (you'll never hear it from a "police administrator") in fact I was once told that police switching to autos from revolvers was a bit of a farce - the RCMP officer who said that added that if added capacity was an issue "why did they never teach us to use speed loaders" he also said that he had searched for an incident where an RCMP officer had shot his revolver dry and needed a reload and could not find one. Most of this "cop killer" stuff is hype to get the attention of the media so that it can be twisted to use it to advance a political opinion. Fear is a great motivator.
