The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 OWNERS thread.

I just bought a FX9 FDE 10 inch (I have not received it yet). I was wondering if I did have to change my buffer tube, would I be able to use the buffer tube from my prohibited Colt 223 AR? And how can I tell what the weight of my AR buffer tube is?
I will be receiving the KAK Shockwave Blade Brace buffer system

The gun functions fine with the original buffer.
When you want to start playing with buffers, google buffer weights and you'll find that there are H1, H2 and H3 buffers out there along with 9mm buffers. Chances are your Colt buffer is an H1 (lightest) assuming it's a carbine stock. What makes the difference in these buffers is the kind of weight that is inside (usually there's three that look like mini hockey pucks). No need to buy a new buffer, you can just buy the weights - there's a pin that retains a piece of delrin on you buffer, pop that out and the little weights slide out. In order of heaviness they come in aluminum, steel and tungsten. Tungsten being the heaviest. I had to order tungsten weights from the U.S. and they sat at customs for almost a month. Dlask lists them but out of stock when I looked. You can also use a stiffer buffer spring. For now I've put in an H3 buffer and it works as it should - can't say I see a difference.

The 223 buffers are to light for use in the 9MM. There is a Colt Industries study on the Internet th suggests the ideal combined weight of the biuffer, bolt and bolt carrier for the 9Mm is between 21 and 23 oz. To slow the bolt return I run a 9.8 Oz buffer in my Raven9 with the 15.8oz boltand bolt carrier which is a bit over Colt's suggestion along with the stock spring. The spring is lighter version to slow the returning bolt.. My FX 9 runs with about the same set up and works for me. I tried a light H3 buffer and it beat the tail of the buffer up pretty good.. I am no expert I. All of this just passing on what I found works for me and it is a work in progress.

Thanks Bob!!!
I'm going to shoot my FX9 and just see how it reacts out of the box. I have a few friends at my range that were in the military, they will know more about my rilfe and how it is acting. I am just getting into rifles. I only got to shoot 40 rounds out of my Colt AR before it was prohibited
I really do appreciate this wealth of knowledge and this gun community!!!

FYI: Assuming you don't have a lemon the FX-9 will run fine out of the box.
Just add a sight/optic and you're good to go.
Personally I like to change out the furniture (BCM pistol grip and a Magpul stock)

I've done a bit of experimenting Buffers and Buffer Springs.
Currently I'm running a Kynshot Hydraulic Buffer and a 308 Carbine Spring.
It is running very well. But I also bought a replacement LRBHO (Last Round Bolt Hold Open device) because I have seen a similar setup make them non-functional and need replacing. (details with pics in one of the links I provide below)

Here's some links to what I've tested.

Hey T-man
Those were well written posts and reviews. It was the information I was looking for.
I have one question. You posted those reviews in 2022, I was wondering if you had the chance to try a 2023 fx9 (if there were any changes)?
I am going to take your recommendation and leave the stock buffer in for now. I'm only using it to plink and punch paper.
Most likely I will be shooting 124gr reloads (I make myself)

Has anyone noticed a change in function when swapping between the 18.5” upper and a shorter one, that would potentially benefit from a buffer weight change?

I’ve noticed that the new ambidextrous charging handle as an “over-insertion” tab that seems to be installed above the barrel nut under the handguard, was over-insertion ever really a problem before? I’m not sure how that would even work.

Got mine a week ago been to the range took some factory, and reloads 124 and 147 in the ~130PF all ran just fine.
Home range IPSC night I had a few self inflicted hiccups but all fine it’s hitting the Alphas!
Buffer felt and sounded fine. Not interested to mess with it just gonna shoot and break it in.

I run the same buffer for both the 10" and 18.5" barrel. I have a TK comp on my 10" barrel and the gun runs dead flat using factory and my reloaded 124, 133 and 147 gr bullets. Absolutely no muzzle rise @ 135PF to 140PF. I am waiting for a second Comp from TK to put on my 18.5" barrel.

Rippo what mags are you using. I assume you are having no issues with the bolt locking back on the last round. Mine FX9 only locks back consistently using SHK labelled 10/32 Glock mags.

Take Care

Thanks. I’ve got a S&J Nano on my 10” which works well. Just wondered if there was any benefit to swapping buffers with uppers.

Eh Bob got a mix some Glock and Magpul few SGM and the gun came with a ETS Group USA mag.
Feeding has been good.
And as to hold open yuck it’s not good!
It’s like the bolt slips off it doesn’t grab, ya know it’s last rd and here it comes but slips.
Even when the bolt on the hold open it’ll slip off soon as ya insert a mag.
Compare it to setting up a mouse trap and putting it on the ground with out it snapping.
Edit; Ment to ask are those SHK Mags Steel?

You typically need heavier buffers for 8” and above, below 8” you may benefit from a slightly lighter buffer. I have a Kynshot hydraulic buffer on the way I’m eager to try.

Yes the SHK Mags are steel. If you have one of those plastic Chamber Safety Flags cut about 1/4" off the tip and take the small piece and Krasy Glue the small piece onto the the notch of the follower. Once the glue is dry and hardened shape the glued part so it will allow the follower to slide freely inside the magazine. You will want to shorten the glued part a bit lower to allow the bolt to travel over it. With the amended follower your mag should lock back the bolt. I found I had to do this to the Glock OEM parts to get the mags to work. You will probably have to play with the mag a bit to get it just right.

The SHK mags I have did not need this treatment and work fine in my FX9. I bought ten of them for $10US in the States and will pick them up from a friend when I go down to Boise in the fall to attend their State IDPA Match. I'll have to pin them before bringing them back. The crazy thing is IDPA in those States that are free you only need one mag to shoot our stages. Well I carry two just in case I have a jam.
