I started wondering about this as a result of a comment in another thread, what do you think the next evolution of the C7 rifle will look like - Optics, Furniture, Barrel Length, Gas System and extras? I'll start - I'm thinking they'll drop the length, but only to 18 inch with a full length gas system. They'll keep the cheesy triad, but add a section of rail to the underside of the handguard. The optic will be the Elcan OS4. Furniture will likely be some kind of UBR knock off, with an Ergo for the pistol grip. What say you?

20" barrel, Some sort of quad rail, Elcan Specter OS4 or 1-4x, updated M4 butt stock, standard A2 grip, and maybe an improved sling system.
Its gonna be something they can easily slap onto the current C7 A1/A2's.

I think we're stuck with what we have for the next 50 years. When they're hopelessly broke and parts are non-existant, we'll adopt something that is already 10-20 years out of date and run with it like a fat kid with a Smarty.
Assuming another Conservative government in 4 years time, I think the C7A3 will be based on the C8A3 with some sort of quad rail vice the triad and likely an Elcan DR. A metal BUIS will probably also be standard. I suspect they will also offer a different butt-stock than the current CAR - Colt Canada is the only maker still using that older design.
Unless NATO switches calibre, I can't see the 20" barrel being thee standard issue with the next rifle iteration. The old guard who insisted on a bbl long enough for the current rifle drill manuals are retiring and the new operators are much more practical. A lot depends on who the LCMM will be.

Just had a focus group come to my unit recently. Unfortunately I didn't get to go but guys did bring up the barrel length and got blank stares in return. "We have shorter barrels on the C8, we're talking about the C7".
They don't seem to get the fact that the C7 indeed should be scrapped and 16" C8s used as the general issue rifle. I'd reprofile that barrel though, zero reason for a rifle 4" shorter to weigh more than a C7.
They will paint the green parts Cadapt or brown to match our new boots... if we have them within the next century.

The 20" uppers do not need to be scrapped, we already paid for them.
They should have iron sights bolted on and be held and issued for drill purposes.
The Colt IUR should be introduced in 16" and 20" versions.

I wish would see more variety in our firearms. I'm not combat arms so my opinion is kind of moot but I wish we had different rifles for different roles.
If you are door kicking in some ####ty urban area I would not want a long ass c7.
If I was foot slogging through some big open valley in some stan country I would want something with a little more oompf than 5.56mm NATO.
For instance if you're in a big open desert, the SCAR-H would be ideal IMO

But unfortunately the current LCMM has had a direct influence on any future LCMM and in my experience most LCMM's DO NOT listen to operators, especially 421 small arms. The list for that particular position is small and unless the guy has spent time at DHTC, he will be of the same ilk as the current one(s).
Most senior 421 techs are full of themselves and are very intimidated when anyone of another trade shows any knowledge of "their specialty", especially a mere 031.

A lot of truth unfortunately in this thread, the CF turns into a rock at the very idea of changing anything on there small arms. Some real diehards in there, kind of like the generals of WW1 in regards to changing tactics...They never have a new idea...lol. Even though there is a plethora of fresh concepts out there.

I heard a rumour that the navy is nixing the MP5 for it's boarding party boys who carry them and going C8 aka US M4 style. If so, too bad, I love emptying the MP5 off the ass end of the boat into the ocean under 5 seconds
Norway is having a lot of trouble with their 416's, especially in the cold. I heard they were thinking about going with C8's, but HK offered them a better deal or something. From what I've heard, that's a decision they're regretting.
Question for you military guys , how does the C7 function in very cold arctic conditions ? I read somewhere the Swedish military did trials on the M16 and it failed lots of their cold weather tests, they then went on to adopt the Bofors AK-5 that is a Swedish made version of the FN FNC.
