When I first conceived of getting my PAL and getting into firearms, I hadn't realised that GAS is a real thing here too.

Coming from the bass guitar world, GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is an absolute cast iron b****h. You have a bass and an amp, and then pretty soon you have 5 (in my case) basses, 3 amps, a drawer full of pedals AND a DIY bass on the go.

I have downsized, sold off most of my collection (down to a bass, an amp and some headphones). The money from my latest and final bass sell-off was used to finance my rifle acquisition.

Now, here's the kicker. I bought the Howa 1500 in 30-06 last week. It's arriving on Friday. It's not even here yet, and I also bought another one, a Savage 110 in .243. There was a really good deal on, and I got it ostensibly for my teen as his YPAL's in the works. But the truth is, GAS hits hard and it turns out rifles are like potato chips... and bass guitars. The optimal number of rifles is n+1, where n is the number you currently have.

Is that a common thing around here and is it normal? Or does wanting to buy more than one just make one a "collector"?

Many here, start with one and end up with.... a whole whack of them plus the accompanyments.

Add a "need" to reload for each - and all the gizmos / supplies associated with that, then undertake casting bullets to "save more" money and you will be truly into "GAS". You will know that you are "in over your head" when you discover that you own multiple rifles using same cartridge - each was a "good idea" when you bought it ...
 
I'm sure it's every bit as bad in the gun world, In fact I would bet it is worse.

In the gun world, the tendency to buy equipment breaks down into multiple subgroups. There are those who buy stuff because they have the skills, and can make use of it. Then there are those who are buying because they want to be able to make use of it, but don't ever develop the skills to do it right. And, there are those who buy it because they heard it was what the skilled people use, and they want to be in that circle, but anyone with eyes can see they don't which end of a rifle the bullet comes out of, and will probably never do anything more with the item than fondle it in their bedroom.

Ah yes. A gun safe is the man's equivalent of the wifely shoe closet. Always one for every occasion, no matter how seldom those occasions are. In all honesty, I try to think very hard about potential use cases/fun factor before I commit to buying anything nowadays. Especially firearms. And like the great Marie Kondo would advise, if it don't spark joy then it's gone to the great plains of the EE.

Monsier, you are talkink mon language! I have a milling machine, a lathe, a welder and a plasma cutter, not to mention a fixturing table, a complete set of contracting tools and a mechanic's set. And yes, six hammers, 5 olfa knives and a separate angle grinder for every available type of grinding wheel. Oi likes to be ready, Oi's do! Oh, and I work a desk job normally.
 
When they switched from FAC to PAL I opted for a POL figuring I had all the guns I would ever need. That actually lasted 3 years, then I decided I really needed (can't even remember which gun) another gun. And on and on it goes.
 
Well, I only have two…..no… wait…. Firearms and all that can be reasonably associated with them can take you on one he77 of a ride. My Dad bought me a new Cooey 39 when I was about 12 and I bought my own used Cooey 84 12 ga when I was 13. I have been on a roll ever since. Collecting, wheeling and dealing, shooting, reloading, casting, researching, selling, now powder coating, all have taken me into the fascinating world of firearms.
 
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

My club has a regular series of Milsurp matches, and typically I bring something I haven't fired before/just reassembled/forgot where it hits. Others at the matches actually practice and try to win. I just hope to not have a gun failure. It has happened.

You sound like me. I shoot to have fun. One event I have very fond memory of is when we had an informal milsurp gathering up the hill from Wolverine. Some of us brought our prized milsurps for everyone to ogle. The best moments for me were when I showed old “smellie” my SAT barrel M91, and when I was shooting the gong with my Norwegian 98 30-06 with buffdog as my coach/spotter. Both those old characters are gone now, but they both left a mark on my soul.

I tried that once, sold off the Mausers, and a bunch of Nagants, and a handful of less desirable LeeEnfields

but now I have more commercial Mauser based sporting and target rifles, a few more magnum hunting rifles, Savage, Browning, Winchesters. That and more Martini Henry, early LeeEnfields, 308/7.62 chambered LeeEnfields, and a bunch more project guns to work on.

I think the downsizing was a net negative downsizing because I have even less space in the gun lockers and have had to buy more gun lockers :( Downsizing..... I'm such a failure

I have tried to limit myself lately to the amount I can cram into my safe. Well the safe is over packed, and I just ordered another one this am.

I have also been shopping for ammo, and reloading components for a rifle I don't even have yet, er just released for shot show, and may be another 1/2 year to be in Canada. Okay, its only a 223, but still!!!

Yea, I'm an addict, and yea I need help! Help in finding all the other rifles I want to add to the safe. I guess I need to start shopping for another safe as well right away. Problems, problems.
