The German service rifle legacy continues...

Well you could name them, and I guess you know the mauser action has been copied for years etc,

Your right, the Mauser action that was utilized the most on other rifles was the one designed in the Gewehr 98. Rifles such as the Spanish Model 1893 and the even the Springfield 1903 are based off this action.

Here are some of the rifles and carbines that come to mind now when I think of German service rifles (I may miss a few so bear with me):

  • Dresye 1866 Needle gun (used in the Franco-Prussian war)
  • Gewehr 71 and Kar 71
  • Gewehr 71/84, Kar 88, Gewehr 91
  • Gewehr 88, 88/S, 88/05, 88/14, 88/15
  • Gewehr 98, Kar98AZ
  • Kar98b
  • Kar98k

I'm proud to say that I have five of the variants listed above but many are very tough to find that are still in their original period configuration and have not been bubba'ed.

Just expanded the collection to include a double dated Kar98AZ from Danzig 1918/1920. Judging by the dirt and dry mud build up that is present on the inside of the stock, she saw action in the trenches and no doubt in the German offensives of 1918. Her serial number is also only 2 digits and a suffix long as well so I am guessing that she was one of the first batch Danzig made in 1918 when they restarted Kar98AZ production.

She is a real beauty!
