The GF wants a rifle... Yeah!

Fun...at the expense of others.....ummm no. Not why I visit.

You probably joined the conversation after the mods cleaned-up the thread... you need more info before you jump into a fray.

Anyway, OP sorry your thread went awry...

For your stated purposes, I think a good bolt action in .223 Rem is your best choice... 0-300 yards no problem... choose one with a 1:9 twist barrel or better yet a 1:8, and load up some heavier target bullets... your girl will love you for it and will enjoy shooting more and will learn good shooting form, without having to deal with distracting recoil... she can step up later... but if she isn't going to hunt, she really doesn't ever have to step up.

oh? care to provide a source?

what about those ruger precision rifle? they look pretty sweet

I love Ruger stuff, but those were made to try and fill a niche....... A cheap out of the box rifle that a guy can buy and be in the long range game......

They sorely lack in form and function IMOP.......

People that are into true long range shooting dump way more cash into their rifles, and that is for a reason....... The RPR is there for people to dabble or play........ But nothing more IMOP........

My Dear Wife and I were at the range last week and a nice young fellow at a bench near ours was shooting a Ruger Precision Rifle in 308.
I believe he had just started handloading for it and it was making nice groups with potential for better.
Not exactly my cup of tea but he was happy with it..... that's the main thing..

Agreed..... And i am not amongst the long range crowd...... And have zip for experience...... But I do understand the principles of obsession if long range is your thing...... It just isn't mine....

Although I do like the idea of stretching myself out and sniping crows, coons and other pests at 400 at my camp, so you never know...... Lol

It may be the perfect rifle for my camp deck....... Lol..... But based on what I know on serious long range (not a lot), it's likely not for them....... But it is well under cost for "what is for them"

OK ............I'm back but with questions and not trying to create a stir............. 120ish...are you saying that rifle is worth $10K......? Then I have to ask after your post as to the reason for the flashlight and IR, do you have the night vision goggles to go with it and how much they cost you? All this to dust a coyote at night........seriously? I'm not being a ####, I am seriously asking cause I want to grasp what this gentleman is saying...............

120ish has a love for high end semis and the funds to back it. Each to their own.

Some have a love for H&H royal doubles and the funds to back it too.

I cannot see myself exploring neither one unless the 649 gods smile in my favour.

In that case I would probably explore the double world before the high end semi, just my preference.

Wood and blue, classic.

Not legally.

"It is unlawful to:
11. -hunt any wildlife or discharge a firearm between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise. (See sunrise/sunset table)"

Isn't there a bit in there that you can "protect your pets and livestock" 24/7? I'm pretty sure there is in BC.

I got my son a 7mm-08 at ten and he used it to get his buck last year at age eleven...mind you using Remington Managed Recoil ammunition. He's going to decide this summer if he's going to use the MR ammo for one more season or not. I'd recommend the 7-08 in a stainless synthetic bolt rifle that is neither too light nor too heavy...and let her get used to it starting with a box or two of the MR ammo...

.

That's it in a nutshell. Some guys want a $10k black gun, some guys want a $10k wood/blue gun. They both think the other guy wasted their money. Laugh2

And then there are guys that have 20 mediocre rifles worth $10k and are happy, and others with 2 fine rifles worth $10k that are happy. Again, they both think the other guy make a mistake. :)

I don't think the other guy made a mistake, just has a different idea of how to spend his money. ;)

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I have talked to the GF and we are going to look for a bolt action heavy barrel 223. She like likes the stainless look but won't pass a deal if it isn't. We will get a Harris bi pod and decent optics. I know there are a few good out of the box guns now it is just a matter of finding HERS! This is a hunt I will enjoy...

If you want to shoot accurately at distance and are mainly at a range you might want to go with a Caldwell "Rock" front rest and a bag for the rear rather than the Harris, if you are mainly going afield then the Harris is great.

This is the one we are going to move towards. It meets all the criteria and she likes the stock. Now to figure out optics!
