Maybe you can find some guys at your local gun club that have some of these aftermarket you can try and get a feel for. Actually most remington 700s and M7s have a pressure point at the end of the stock that intentionally contacts the barrel. Maybe someone opened up your barrel channel. Build up a small pad with black tape at the bottom of the channel and try it. If it helps you may get some use from it til you decide on an aftermarket stock. I have an SPS model that I filled the forend with 2 part epoxy to take the wiggle out till i got something better. Shoots so good I have forgot about buying aftermarket
 
Unfortunately I'm not a member of a club per say so asking the guys at the range isnt really an option. I've been debating bedding the hole thing for some added rigidity but I'm not in a rush to shoot this one again so I'm leaning towards a new stock
 
Well in the future if you can find a club I encourage you to join. You will find new friends and information.
 
I've looked into the clubs around calgary with a decent role range and they either have a long waitlist or are specialist clubs that only cater to competition shooting ect
 
If you aren't able to do the shooting range thing,,, then another option is to have your quality gun smith friend tune your rifle,,, optic,,, and ammo up...

It costs a few bucks to get it to shoot,,, but you'ld be ahead of the game on your next trip to the range... nothing like dropping your next 3 shots into the bulls eye at a 100 yards...

I get all of mine worked over to eliminate all things that """could""" crop up over time,,, getting things sorted from day 1 saved me alot of time and funds...

Only an idea at your chooosing since there are lots of ways to get the old girl dialed in...

So for w/e reason I cant seem to post pictures on the forums here but anyways. I ended up replacing the stock, when I pulled the old stock off the recess for the recoil lug was almost non existent on the front end not too sure if this would cause issues but between that and the amount of flex in the stock I'm glad it's gone. My scope is on it's way to get some repairs done and see if it's worth the trouble or not.

Anyways next up grade will be trigger and bottom metal, thinking about getting a Giselle super 700 does anyone have any experience with them? Are they worth it or should I just go with a timney?
 
I can’t speak for timney or Gisselle but I’m very happy with the trigger techs I have tried. Canadian too!
 
I found the 4.5-14 finicky with eye relief. 2.5-8x36 is my all time favourite and plenty of mag for whatever I’m going to do.

Sounds like a optic, or even loose bases/rings.

Oddball caliber.
Rifle is probably a 《$700 item. Spend three times that, your never getting that $ for it.

Buy something already tinkered with, or new. Easier to resell....easier to get precision.

Unless of course its sentimental.....still its Hoyts post even then.

I ended up getting ahold of buddy with the mcmillian stock you suggested. Took a bit of work to get the barrel free floating as it had already been bedded but I think I've got to where it needs to be now.
 
If buddy at Trace optics cant get the redfield back up to snuff I'm leaning towards GS3 5-15x50 as I've had great success with other stiener scopes in the past.
 
Even after a refurb I'd upgrade the optic. I can't find fault with your Steiner choice, (I don't know that they have 5-15 option in GS3 line) although I prefer a smaller objective size so I can mount the scope as low as possible. I also can't find many flaws with a Leupold vx3 as other have suggested.
You say you have inherited the rifle, do you have any idea on the round count? The 7 STW is seriously overbore and it wouldn't be unheard of to wear out the barrel particularly if it ever got used on a rodent safari without some care. I do not believe that is what was giving you inconsistent zero retention, I like many other posters believe that the gremlin there is somewhere in your scope and mount setup. I like the 7 STW a lot but if I ever build another one I will be getting a second barrel made up for it at the same time.

I agree that part of the problem is definitely in the scope, having said that the reason I'm looking to refurb it is because I've taken it to a number of shops in calgary and everyone who has seen it has told me even given it age it will hold up with just about any middle of the road modern scopes.

As for barrel life I'm not too sure how many rounds where put through it but it was purchased a year maybe 2 before my grandfather passed from what I can tell and he was a collector so I'm hoping it isn't worn out.

I wish I could figure out why it wont let me post pictures so I could show you guys the original stock, not only is it flimsy but it's missing 80-90% of the recoil lug channel and it looks like it came from factory that way. So I'm glad the stock has been replaced
 
So bit of an update, after looking into it, the only bottom metal sets that will accept the stw are a bit pricier then I'd like to spend on a dbm at the moment. Also inflight of the expanding c0vid 19 pandemic I decided to forgo a trigger for the time being and opted to go with a new option. Ended up with a stiener gs3 4-20x50 bit more range then the other one I was looking at with the same objective so.

At some point I'll be installing new bottom metal and trigger but for the moment I'd rather have it working
