The movie unambiguously takes place during the Civil War. I suspect that the reason metallic cartridges are shown being used with cap and ball revolvers is a combination of artistic license and the fact that prop guns often were converted to use standard 5-in-1 blanks.
I still say it's because they didn't want to spend the film time on watching them charge and press balls into the cylinder chambers and then laboriously cap them while their tongues stuck out of the corners of their mouths in concentration for such a difficult and fussy task....
But yeah, I think you're right. While I appreciate 1851 Navy's insights I just don't think the movie director would have been that careful to keep things accurate. He wanted to make a point that Tuco wasn't just a filthy outlaw, but had at least a set of skills and experience suitable for survival.
15567, if you want a faithful 4 click replica of the 1873 SAA then it'll need to be a Pietta, Uberti or earlier Vaquero. The more recent Rugers use modern internals. That was the deciding factor in my own choice of cowboy action shooting guns. As it happened I found a nicely priced Pietta on the EE here for a price that I felt I could get back if I didn't like it. When I got it the gun it looked, felt and shot well enough that I bought the second of the pair I needed new from Marstar. The new one needed a little internal action work to reduce some of the trigger creep and slightly lighten the mainspring for a reduced trigger pull. But once done it shot as nicely as the used one I had gotten earlier. From this I gather the previous owner of the used one had done a trigger job on it. The grip wood used by Pietta leaves a little to be desired but the fit and finish of the metal work leaves little room for improvement. They really are nicely done. Are the Ubertis any nicer? It's hard to say. I've got a couple of C&B Remington Ubertis. They are super sweet but I can't really say that they are any nicer than the Piettas other than the selection and finish of the wood grips.
