Okay so its not so great. Whatever.

Which mags do you guys use and which ones do you stay far away from? These damn guns are way too finicky... if its not one thing its always another. My STI shoots like a dream but so far is reluctant to lock back on last round. I have a couple of Colt mags and one regular STI mag. 90% of the time it doesn't lock back. The followers are junk, IMO.

Anyways, I ordered a couple of Tripp Research mags after reading about this subject on various websites, and it looks like the most solid follower design out there so Im hoping it works.

Anyone have any tips or tricks? Is there a magic solution to this issue? Other than this one problem the STI is almost flawless... I don't wanna be forced into using my Glock for action shooting but if I can't fix the last round lock issue the 1911s no good to me. The gun in question is an STI Ranger II in 9mm.

If it does it with all your mags, then it's likely your slide stop needs replacing, or you are inadvertantly (big word) holding it down with your hand while shooting.

Mag-wise my Kimber hated the Wilson Combat 8 rounders I had until I swapped out the springs for the stronger Wolff springs. When I ordered the springs I also ordered one of the Wolff mags to try and it's been great as well.

I think as long as you stay away from triple k magazines yout going to get a good product, so many good 1911 magazines out there now.

- Wilson Combat
- Novak
- MecGar
- Smith and Wesson
- Chip McCormick

etc....

I did pick up a MecGar the other day but haven't had a chance to test it out yet. Looking at it closely I can tell the follower is lightyears ahead of the other mags I have. On my other mags the follower is flimsy and I really believe its to blame for the gun not locking back. I doubt there's anything wrong with the slide stop.

Also someone mentioned to me that sometimes 9mm 1911 users will opt for .38 mags for whatever reason... is there something to it? The MecGar mag I got the other day is for 38 technically but it cycled through properly and locked on open (though I didn't actually fire it, just manual cycle)..

wilson combat NEW 10 round 9mm mags are awesome, they do give you a little less advantage in IDPA then the 9 rounders did but they supposedly function 100%.....

I am just waiting for P&D to get some in stock or I am goign to order 10 for my colt commander in 9mm.

The only ones that work in my Nork Commander are the cheap ones and they work fine, the rest just don't function well.

I had the same problem with my .40 Trojan. I put in an Ed Brown slide stop and it locks back on an empty mag every time now.

I use Metalform mags both 8 rounders and 10 and both work great. I have heard great things about the cobra mags in 9mm and .40 in Trojan but have not tried them in my gun.

the 8 rounders that came with my STI work perfectly. I also bought 8 McCormick 10 rounders. They've been so so. I had to top them off and leave them loaded for like 5 or 6 weeks to make work, otherwise my STI can't go into battery for the first 2 rounds of the mags. Go figure.

Does the Ed Brown drop right in or is fitting of some kind required?
